What are the responsibilities and job description for the Security System Technician position at City of Lakeland, FL?
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS
This is skilled work encompassing all aspects of physical security systems of City facilities, including but not limited to locks, electronic and electrical surveillance systems, card access systems, and low voltage alarm systems. Work is performed without close supervision but is reviewed while in progress and upon completion.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assists in maintaining and installing building systems related to all security equipment, video surveillance, alarm systems, and personnel safety in City facilities and public areas.
- Performs equipment tests, diagnostic functions, access control, and security systems.
- Performs preventative maintenance on access control and video surveillance systems.
- Performs miscellaneous repairs to various building systems.
- May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
- Position is designated as Mission Critical.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE)
- High school diploma from an accredited school or a GED.
- Two (2) years of experience working with security systems.
- Three (3) years of experience working in various building trades utilizing power tools and appropriate PPE for the work performed.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with appropriate endorsements as required by the employing department.
- Must possess a valid phone number.
- Must obtain the Genetec software certification within one year of employment.
- Medeco certified preferred.
- Must be able to pass a secondary background check provided by the City of Lakeland Police Department within thirty (30) days of hire. Failure to pass this requirement will result in termination of employment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
- Knowledge of the installation and troubleshooting of access control systems.
- Knowledge of the principles of operation and characteristics of controllers, detectors, relays, bells, sirens, screamers, and telephone circuits.
- Knowledge of low voltage systems, including network-based interfaces.
- Knowledge of the practices, methods, and tools of the building maintenance trade.
- Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions pertaining to various mechanical trades.
- Some skills as a locksmith; Medeco certified preferred.
- Skill in using a wide range of building trade tools and shop equipment.
- Ability to perform basic programming for physical security systems.
- Ability to understand and work from sketches, penciled layouts, rough plans, and specifications.
- Ability to keep routine records.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- This position requires work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, stretching, or lifting constantly. It also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force regularly and exceptional skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
- Exposure to bright/dim light, dust, pollen, extreme heat/cold, wet/humid conditions, extreme noise levels, animals/wildlife, vibration, fumes, noxious odors, traffic, and moving machinery.
- The job requires normal visual acuity, field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
