POSITION:
Electrical Inspector
LOCATION:
City of Lafayette Engineering Department
HOURS:
Monday through Friday – 7:00 to 3:30
SALARY RANGE:
$3085.70 bi-weekly
DUTIES:
The Electrical Inspector ensures compliance with electrical codes and standards by conducting inspections,
performing plan reviews, and providing guidance to contractors, developers, and homeowners. This position
requires technical expertise in electrical systems, construction practices, and applicable codes, as well as the
ability to communicate effectively and professionally with diverse stakeholders.
REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Minimum of five (5) years of approved apprenticeship, 8,000 hours of
on-the-job training, or five (5) years of experience as an electrician or electrical inspector. Certification in electrical
inspection or willingness to obtain certification within a specified timeframe is preferred. In-depth knowledge of the
National Electrical Code (NEC), International Fire Code (IFC), and Indiana Building Code (IBC). Proficiency in
reading and interpreting electrical and building blueprints and diagrams. Strong problem-solving skills and attention
to detail to identify code violations and unsafe conditions. Ability to maintain detailed and accurate records.
Proficiency with computers, tablets, and software including Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel). Excellent verbal
and written communication skills for interacting with contractors, developers, city officials, and the public. Perform
emergency inspections as needed, including after-hours on-call duties. Participate in training and professional
development to stay updated on changes to electrical codes and inspection practices. Possession of a valid Indiana
driver’s license and a demonstrated safe driving record.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Spend approximately 75% of work hours conducting field inspections, requiring walking, climbing, stooping,
kneeling, and crawling on construction sites and uneven terrain. Exposure to varying weather conditions,
construction environments, and occasional dust or debris. Office duties involve prolonged sitting, use of
computers and electronic devices, and preparing reports. Occasional use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
is required for specific inspections.
