The full-time Court Clerk plays a key role in the daily operations of the Lafayette Municipal Court, performing a wide range of technical, administrative, and customer facing duties. This position requires strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast paced environment. The role supports the Court’s mission by ensuring accurate recordkeeping, providing courteous and professional service to the public, and facilitating efficient courtroom and front desk operations. Court Clerks work collaboratively as a team, with all clerks cross trained and expected to demonstrate proficiency in a variety of operational areas.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Strong accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and manage time effectively in a high-volume environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to quickly learn specialized court and case management systems.
  • Ability to interpret and follow established procedures and legal processes.
  • Strong teamwork skills and willingness to assist across various court functions.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
  • Typing speed and 10-key with accuracy sufficient to perform assigned tasks.
TRAINING: High School Diploma or equivalent
EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of general clerical experience, preferably in courts or records management, or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working in a court or legal environment.
  • Experience working with the Colorado Crime Information Center (CCIC) and OpenFox.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:

Public Interaction & Customer Service:
  • Communicate court policies and procedures to the public via phone, email, and in person.
  • Assist defendants, attorneys, jurors, witnesses, interpreters, and other court participants with check ins and case related questions.
  • Handle sensitive or difficult situations with professionalism and tact.
  • Maintain confidentiality where required by law or policy.
Courtroom Support:
  • Serve as courtroom clerk during court sessions.
  • Manage check ins and coordinate flow of individuals entering the courtroom.
  • Assist with paperwork, forms, and scheduling of return dates as directed.
Case Processing & Data Entry:
  • Enter data related to pleadings, dispositions, community service, sentencing requirements, and other case components.
  • Prepare, organize, and maintain court files in accordance with established procedures.
  • Prepare appeals to District court following statutory guidelines.
  • Enter warrants and process arrest notifications.
  • Track completion of community service, classes, and other sentencing requirements.
Document Processing & Records Management:
  • Process citations, subpoenas, motions, and other court documents.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records following court procedures and retention standards.
  • Conduct CCIC searches and data entry when required.
Financial Handling:
  • Perform cashiering duties including accepting fine and fee payments.
  • Balance daily cash receipts and maintain accurate financial records.
  • Process and manage bonds received by the Court.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to pass a thorough background investigation.
  • Incumbent must pass CJIS Security and Privacy Training within 1-3 days of employment and before accessing the court system and must obtain CCIC OSN certification within 6 months after employment begins.
