The City of La Mesa has an exciting career opportunity to join our Community Development Department as a Building Inspector I/II. This position will contribute to the Department’s responsibility to land development programs and services to help create a safe, healthy, and economically viable community
Building Inspectors for the City of La Mesa are key contributors in fulfilling the mission of the department, ensuring that the La Mesa community is safe, healthy, and viable. Employees in this job classification inspect residential, commercial, and industrial buildings at various stages of construction, alteration, or repair; examine residential plans that are submitted for a building permit; investigate violations and complaints and conduct enforcement actions; and otherwise participate in overseeing building activity to ensure public safety and compliance with model codes and State and local building regulations.
Building Inspector I: This is the entry level class in the Building Inspector series. This class is distinguished from the Building Inspector II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related building inspection work experience; however, the incumbent is expected to have significant experience in the building trades and certification as a building inspector is required within six months of h ire. Advancement to the "II" level is based on demonstrated proficiency in performing the full range of building inspections, possession of required certifications, and is at the discretion of higher level supervisory or management staff.
Building Inspector II: This is the full journey level class within the building inspection series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Building Inspector I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned including the performance of the more complex inspection projects. Advancement to the II level is based on management judgment and/or certification or testing which validates the performance of the full range of job duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this are flexibly staffed and may be filled by advancement from the I level, or when filled from the outside, require prior experience.
- Perform field building inspections of both residential and commercial buildings; ensure that structures are being constructed in accordance with approved plans and specifications; inspect all aspects of building construction, including plumbing, electrical, structural, and mechanical installations, for compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations; note defects in construction work and issues correction notices.
- Provide information and assistance to architects, engineers, contractors, builders, and the general public in the field and office; explain and interpret applicable codes, ordinances, and zoning regulations.
- Assist at the public counter; review routine plans and specifications; issue permits and collect fees.
- Maintain a variety of files and records related to areas of assignment; input and retrieve information into computer data bases daily; prepare reports, correspondence, and a variety of other written materials as requested.
- Receive and investigate complaints on industrial, commercial, and residential conditions, health hazards, and safety hazards, conduct enforcement actions.
- Conduct pre-construction inspections of swimming pools and grading at construction sites for compliance with regulations.
- Perform related duties as required.

Building Inspector I:
- Possession of an ICC Building Inspection certificate is required within six months of appointment.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate California valid driver's license
- Possession of an ICC Building Inspection certificate. Possession of ICC certification as a Combination Building Inspector is desirable.
- Possession of an appropriate California valid driver’s license.
Candidates whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the City will be invited to participate in the examination process for this position. The examination process may consist of any or all of the following components: Appraisal interview and skills test.

Salary : $66,789 - $96,117
