Recreation Leader II

General Statement of Job
Under occasional supervision, performs responsible work by supervising and planning of recreation classes and activities. Work is performed under the supervision of the Recreation & Leisure Services Coordinator and/or Recreation Specialist.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions
Supervises, plans and conducts general recreation classes and activities.

In absence of the Recreation & Leisure Services Supervisor and/or Recreation Specialist, oversee all aspects of the facility operations including customer support, security, safety, crowd control, and management of other part time staff. Opens, closes and secures site as assigned.

Provides guidance and assists in the training and supervision of Recreation Leaders I and volunteers. Implements age and developmentally appropriate activities.

Conducts programs in an orderly fashion maintaining discipline and good conduct from the participants.

Greets participants and visitors and maintains positive communication.

Maintains accurate administrative records including but not limited to daily attendance, participant emergency information, accidents reports, and medication logs. Prepares program reports as needed.

Conducts registration for programs as well as collects fees and maintains records of moneys received; Rec Trac.

Develops and distributes accurate information regarding classes and activities.

Maintains open and positive communication with staff.

Ensures materials/supplies/ equipment are set-up and prepared in advance. Enforces rules and regulations to ensure safety of participants.

Maintains neatness and cleanliness of activity areas. Administer basic first aid as needed.

May perform facility maintenance, i.e. garbage disposal or custodial work. May be required to work events and rentals as needed.

Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Education and Training
Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age. Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by 2-4 years of experience working with recreational programs. Must possess or have the ability to obtain within three (3) months of hire; CPR/AED/First Aid certifications. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License. Must possess or obtain the most current FEMA 100, 200, and 700 Incident Command System certifications within 6 months of appointment to the job.

Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required

Schedule: Hours and schedule varies depending on the time of the year, not to exceed on average of 28 hours per week. Nights, weekends and early mornings may be required.

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including a computer, basic office equipment, telephone, hand and power tools, etc. Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant, physical effort, typically involving some combination of remaining on feet for extended periods of time, climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20) pounds to moderately heavy weight (up to 50 pounds).

Knowledge: Has through knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the Parks & Recreation Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Recreation Leader. Is knowledgeable in the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Has knowledge in the areas of recreation, program organization and implementation, etc. Is able to make sound, educated decisions. Has the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize daily assignments and work activities. Has the ability to offer assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required. Is able to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position. Has the ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency. Is able to prepare simple reports and records.

Has knowledge of the terminology used within the department. Knows how to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals and members of the public through contact and cooperation. Has the ability to communicate professionally in confrontational situations. Has thorough knowledge of proper English usage. Has knowledge of and skill in the use of computers for data and word processing. Has knowledge of the standard equipment, tools, materials and practices of the industry. Has skill in the care and use of required tools and equipment. Has knowledge of applicable occupational hazards and safety precautions. Knows how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.

Language Ability: Requires ability to read a variety of policy and procedure manuals, technical manuals, equipment manual, etc. Requires the ability to prepare reports, records, etc., with proper format. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow verbal and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with co-workers and guests, and the public.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, to utilize mathematical formulas, to determine percentages and decimals and to determine time and weight.

Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency or unusual situations. The worker may be subject to danger or risk to a slight degree and to tension as a regular, consistent part of the job.

Physical Communications: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
