This is skilled work involving responsibility for efficient and workmanlike performance of mechanical repairs and maintenance of ordinary difficulty on a variety of automotive, industrial, and agricultural equipment. General instructions are received from the Garage Foreman, Assistant Superintendent or Superintendent. Immediate supervision may be exercised over the serviceman, trainees, and helpers.

Examples of work: (Illustrative only)

  • Checks a variety of automotive equipment for worn, damaged or defective parts by visual inspection, road tests or use of testing devices and recommends needed repairs.
  • Performs general maintenance and skilled repairs on light and heavy trucks, agricultural, landscaping, construction, and automotive equipment.
  • Disassembles, repairs, and adjusts front and rear axle assemblies, main drive shaft, transfer case, clutch and transmission.
  • Disassembles and replaces defective or damaged subassemblies.
  • Repair, replace or troubleshoot rotary pumps, piston pumps or centrifugal pumps.
  • Makes major and minor repairs on all gasoline and diesel engines such as replacing bearings, pistons and or rebuilding engines.
  • Adjusts steering mechanisms and aligns wheels.
  • Makes brake adjustments.
  • Repairs ignition and electrical systems.
  • Maintains and repairs hydraulic systems.
  • Occasionally operates machine shop equipment including lathes, grinders, drill presses and other metal working machines to make, rebuild or repair parts for automotive equipment.
  • Trains other employees in the repair of automotive equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment using computers and service manuals.

The qualified candidate will have good knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and of the tools, terminology and accident precautions of the trade; general knowledge of tire repair and equipment; general knowledge of computers as related to engine repair; general knowledge on operation of acetylene torch and stick welder; demonstrated ability to make repairs on a variety of automotive equipment; ability to work from plans, specifications and rough sketches and to follow oral and written instructions; ability to get along well with others; good hand and eye coordination; good physical condition

Acceptable Training And Experience

Two (2) years of experience as a skilled automotive mechanic in a garage or repair shop and either:

  • Graduation from a high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
  • Completion of 12th grade and two years of work experience.
  • Six (6) years of work experience on trucks or related automotive equipment.
  • Trade School or ASE Certification.

Special Requirement

Must obtain a CDL license within 12 months of date of employment.

Ability to pass a D.O.T. pre-employment drug screen and physical

Ability to obtain NYS Inspection License

This posting is in the non-competitive class. The position will be filled on a permanent basis after serving a probationary period of not less than eight weeks nor more than fifty-two weeks.
