What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Worker I (Street Maintenance) position at City of Kingsport, TN?
Purpose
Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in various divisions throughout the City.
Essential Functions
- Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks using appropriate hand and power tools (shovels, rakes, drills, blowers, chainsaws, pipe saws, etc.);
- Operates small equipment (mowers, tractors, skid steer, brush chipper, stump grinder, trencher, infield machine, asphalt rollers, concrete saws, pipe cleaning equipment, etc.);
- Maintains facilities (including playgrounds, fountains, walkways, sports fields, aquatic facilities, skate parks, open green spaces, utility plants, pump stations, underground utility infrastructure, storage facilities, transit facilities, etc.);
- Ensures all tasks are completed in a safe and efficient manner;
- Performs minor maintenance/repairs to equipment and vehicles used;
- Performs appropriate inspections and keeps equipment and vehicles clean and in safe working conditions;
- Keeps appropriate records of the tasks performed;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Assigned Departments:
- Park Maintenance - Maintains parks and recreational facilities.
- Grounds Maintenance – Maintains other open area grounds within the City.
- Landscaping – Installation, maintenance, and removal of trees and landscaping; Pesticide application.
- Transit - Washing and cleaning vehicles and facilities; Mowing and landscaping KATS grounds; General care of KATS/Transit facilities.
- Street Maintenance – Repairs and general maintenance to roads and sidewalks.
- Building Maintenance – Maintenance and cleaning of City buildings.
Qualifications
- Ability to work independently:
- Knowledge of the appropriate skilled trades associated with the assigned department;
- Knowledge in using hand and power tools in construction and maintenance work;
- Knowledge of methods and practices used in performing skilled building maintenance;
- Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of relevant equipment;
- Knowledge of the elements of construction technology as they relate to the assigned construction, maintenance, and repair activities;
- Skill in performing manual work requiring periods of extensive physical exertion and potential exposure to adverse weather conditions;
- Skill in reading schematics and following written instructions;
- Skill in communicating effectively orally and in writing, including tactful and courteous communications with the public;
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, other city personnel, and the public.
Education and Experience
Education and Experience:
- No education required;
- Experience working in a team environment;
- Valid TN or VA driver’s license.
When assigned to Street Maintenance:
Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) from the State of Tennessee or Virginia, appropriate to the assigned area, within the first year of employment.
