General Statement of Job
The firefighter participates in fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical operations, and all duties associated therein, assuring that fire stations and equipment are ready for emergency and non-emergency situations. Prevents fires by functioning as a certified firefighter.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
Responds to emergency calls and performs fire fighting duties, including: medical emergencies; fire suppression functions; operating equipment; laying hose; raising and climbing ladders; search and rescue operations; and containing hazardous materials spills, etc.
Participates in training classes, drills, and simulations.
Studies city geography and participates in physical training and conditioning programs.
Participates in fire safety and prevention programs, makes presentations and teaches classes to the general public, assists in conducting station tours, conducts pre-incident surveys and inspections, and assists in developing pre-fire plans.
Operates radio communication equipment and acts as the Communications Officer.
Assists in searching for evidence after fire incident.
Assists other firefighters and agencies by responding to calls, serves as backup when needed.
Performs maintenance and minor repairs of the fire station, grounds, and equipment; performs safety checks on various pieces of equipment; changes oil, filters, fluids, etc., on vehicles and apparatus; and performs general housekeeping functions within and around the station.
Performs inspection and routine maintenance on fire hydrants and checks water pressure.
Maintains the grounds of the fire station, including mowing, edging, and raking.
Reports administrative and operational problems to supervisors.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualification Requirements

- Requires a valid class B operator’s license, basic firefighter certification, NPQ Firefighter certification, and medical first responder certification.
- High School diploma or GED and any combination of education, training, and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
- Ability to use fire vehicles, communications equipment, general office equipment, lifesaving equipment, rescue equipment, computers, a/v equipment, flashlights, ladder trucks, and fire suppression equipment.
- Knowledge of internal departmental policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of applicable state, federal, and local ordinances, laws, rules, and regulations.
- Knowledge of city street system, hospital location, and physical layout of the City.
- Knowledge of mechanical principles, operational techniques, and application of fire fighting and basic life support equipment.
- Knowledge of fire behavior, basic fire fighting strategy, and tactics and basics of hazardous materials operations.
- Knowledge of fire prevention and safety procedures.
- Knowledge of first aid and emergency medical care.
- Knowledge of hydraulics.
- Knowledge of building and equipment maintenance/repair techniques.
- Knowledge of record keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and records management techniques.
- Knowledge of safe practices and procedures for performing essential functions of the job.
- Knowledge of standard business arithmetic, including percentages and decimals.
- Ability to respond quickly to changing situations.
- Ability to operate and maintain all assigned equipment required to perform the essential functions of the job.
- Ability to use specialized equipment including fire pump, ladder truck, and other fire suppression equipment.
- Ability to develop and make presentations and teaching classes.
- Ability to communicate orally with internal staff, citizens, and other departmental staff in order to give and receive information in a courteous manner.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and so forth.
- Ability to deal with problems and stressful situations involving several variables in changing situations.

Working Conditions and Physical Abilities
While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects; ascend and descend stairs, ladders, ramps, fences, scaffolding, etc.; maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, or running on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces; move about on hands and knees; bend body downward and forward, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles; reach with hands and arms; speak and hear; use color, sound, shape and odor perception; and push, pull and/or lift over 50 pounds frequently and over 100 pounds occasionally.
Essential functions are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, including inclement weather. Duties may involve exposure to substances (chemicals and gases) requiring special precautions, including protective clothing. The work environment routinely involves imminent danger from conditions or events which cannot be fully anticipated or protected against, and which exposes the incumbent to life threatening situations.
