General Statement of Job
The Patrol Officer is an advanced level position responsible for performing law enforcement work to protect life and property, prevent the commission of crimes, and preserve peace by functioning as a certified peace officer in the department. Enforce traffic laws and attempts to deter crimes.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Maintains law and order and protects lives and property.
Patrols assigned zone, makes security checks, responds to calls, investigates nature of complaints,
serves as mediator between parties, detects and apprehends law violators, issues citations and warnings, generates reports, completes forms, locates defendants, and serves warrants.
Conducts and prepares investigations of vehicle accidents, renders aid to injured persons, requests other assistance, directs traffic, investigates serious injury and fatality crashes, draws diagrams, determines causes, and writes citations and reports.
Conducts preliminary investigations of crimes against people and property and investigates illegal drug activities.
Responds to citizens’ complaints of illegal activity, opens cases, gathers information, recruits and maintains informants, obtains and serves arrest and search warrants, traces and recovers stolen property, assists other divisions and agencies, conducts interviews, arrests offenders, fingerprints and photographs offenders, completes various reports and forms, and performs surveillance operations.
Responds to crime scenes; identifies, collects, marks, and preserves physical evidence; photographs crime scenes; lifts fingerprints; and makes composites.
Prepares for and testifies in judicial proceedings.
Presents crime prevention and safety programs (DARE, etc.) to schools and other organizations.
Assists other officers or agencies by responding to calls and providing backup.
May respond to fires and serve as firefighter, as needed.
Provides traffic direction and escort for events; transports prisoners and witnesses.
Provides assistance to motorists.
May serve on special squads and teams.
Performs maintenance and minor repairs on assigned vehicles and equipment's; inspects and tests equipment to assure safety.
Reports administrative and operational problems to supervisors.
Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of preliminary investigative and intelligence procedures and techniques. Knowledge of city street system, hospital location, and physical layout of the City. Knowledge of first aid and emergency medical care. Knowledge and mechanics of arrest and restraint tactics. Knowledge of traffic investigation procedures and techniques. Knowledge of illegal drugs, recognition, and psychological and physical effects. Knowledge of court system and procedures. Knowledge of juvenile court system and procedures. Knowledge of record keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and records management techniques. Knowledge of safe practices and procedures for performing essential functions of the job. Knowledge of standard business arithmetic, including percentages and decimals. Ability to respond quickly to changing situations. Ability to operate and maintain all assigned equipment required to perform the essential functions of the job. Ability to conduct in depth interviews of suspects, witnesses, and victims. Ability to analyze crime scenes. Ability to use specialized equipment including firearms and surveillance equipment. Ability to develop and make presentations and teach classes. Ability to communicate orally with internal staff, citizens, and other departmental staff in order to give and receive information in a courteous manner. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and so forth. Ability to deal with problems and stressful situations involving several variables in changing situations. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to pass physical fitness/efficiency examinations.
