Building Official
Salary Range: $93,097.26 - $139,644.96 depends on qualifications
Performs a variety of routine and complex administrative, supervisory, and technical work in administering and enforcing building and related codes.
The employee will have the responsibility of:
- Managing and supervising assigned operations to achieve goals within available resources
- Planning and organizing workloads and staff assignments
- Training, motivating, and evaluating assigned staff; reviews progress and directs changes as needed
- Providing leadership and oversight in the administration of building and construction codes, permit activity and fees, regulatory review of floodplain applications, development plan review, contractor registration and inspections
- Overseeing field inspections of structural, foundations, framing, electrical, plumbing, mechanical systems, energy, etc. for compliance with adopted codes
- Determining work procedures, prepares work schedules, and expedites workflow
- Researching problems and complaints regarding commercial and residential buildings
- Maintaining office documents within Permit and Retention policy and software
- Administering the review of new subdivision plans for compliance with land use zoning and flood prevention ordinances
- Investigating buildings damaged by fire or other causes to determine correctional or safety measures to be taken to permit their continued use
- Conducting on-call emergency inspections
- Preparing cases for Construction Board of Adjustments
The work environment will require the employee to:
- Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high precarious places
- Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles

Required Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from high school or equivalent; and five (5) years of experience in general building inspections or construction and/or related fields; or
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in building technology, construction management, mechanical, electrical, plumbing or building construction, or closely related field, preferred.
- Any equivalent combination or substitution of education and experience on a year for year basis
Special Requirements:
- Must have a valid Texas driver’s license within ninety (90) days of hire
- Must have a valid driver’s license by date-of-hire
- Must obtain a State Plumbing Inspector license, Texas Flood Plain Administrators certification (CFM), and Certified Building Official or Master Code Official from a nationally recognized code organization within twelve (12) months of employment.
- Must obtain both ICC Residential and Commercial Energy Code certifications within twelve (18) months of employment.
- Must be able to obtain within twelve (12) months other licenses or certifications required by local, state, or federal laws to perform the necessary job functions
