Lifeguard

Under the direction of the Assistant Pool Manager and the Pool Manager, Lifeguards supervise all swimming activities at assigned pool.   Maintain safety and cleanliness in and around the pool area, including maintaining order and discipline among all swimmers and visitors, and enforcing all pool rules.  Must be courteous and cooperative with the public at all times.This information is intended to be descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position.  The following examples do not identify all duties performed by any single incumbent.

1. Monitors and maintains swimmer safety at all times by preventing accidents and responding quickly to emergency situations.
2. Responds to minor and major emergencies providing a high standard of care.
3. Follows the comprehensive Aquatic Risk Management Program as required by Ellis & Associates and the facility’s Emergency Action Plan.
4. Maintains general appearance and cleanliness of assigned area and perform general housekeeping of assigned area; maintain water safety equipment.
5. Assists with assigned recreation / aquatics programs and special events, including but not limited to setting up and tearing down equipment for scheduled recreation and swimming activities / events.
6. Stays current on skills and required certifications through Ellis & Associates
7. Maintains the cleaning of the Olympic Pool and related facilities and equipment throughout the duration of the season, especially during peak hours of operation.
8. Teaches, organizes, and demonstrates swim lessons and other aquatics programming.
9. Maintains inventories, ensures proper care of City property and equipment, and assists with facility security, including locking and securing the premises.
10. Responsible for utilizing basic computer skills to complete time entry and assist with software-related tasks for swim lesson scheduling and maintenance.
11. Performs other duties as may be assigned.

Education, Certification and Experience Required:

• Completion of 9^th grade level in high school or greater.
• Must be 15 years of age or older.*
• 20/25 vision or better with corrective lenses.
• Jeff Ellis & Associates ILTP (International Lifeguard Training Program) License training provided on-site at applicants expense.
• Possession of a valid Texas Class C Driver’s License preferred, but not required.
• Experienced swimmer.
• No experience as a lifeguard required.
• Experience in public relations preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Excellent swimming skills.
• Ability to administer Basic Life Support Skills with or without assistance.
• Ability to perform all skills required for certifications.
• Ability to exercise good judgment and effectively enforce pool rules.
• Ability to maintain courteous and helpful working relationships with the public of all ages.
• Ability to demonstrate cooperative behavior with team, supervisors, and the public.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions from supervisor(s).
• Ability to give verbal and physical instructions to swim lesson students.
• Ability to work effectively under minimal supervision.
• Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance.

Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids:

• Safety equipment (rescue tubes, AED, etc.), training equipment, pool skimmer

Protective Equipment Required:

• Sun protective equipment such as 100% UV sunglasses, billed/brimmed hat or cap; sunscreen.
• Gloves when using cleaning solutions in custodial work.

*Special Restrictions:
For employees under age 15:

• May not work before 7 a.m. or after 7 p.m. except from June 1 through Labor Day when the evening hour is extended to 9 p.m.
• May not work more than 8 hours a day on a non-school day.
• May not work more than 40 hours a week during non-school weeks.
• May not be required to load or unload trash or operate any power equipment.

Continuously sits or stands, while looking, listening, and talking, while monitoring and maintaining swimmer safety.  Frequently stands, walks, lifts, and carries safety equipment; chairs and tables on the pool deck; pushes/pulls vacuum, broom, and water hoses, and handles equipment; kneels, bends, and climbs stairs and guard stands. Occasionally reaches for safety equipment, chairs, and tables on pool deck, and twist while demonstrating safety moves, swim lessons, and diving instructions.  This position is subject to outside environmental conditions, including extreme heat while performing the job.
