Under the direction of the Pool Manager and the Recreation Manager, the Assistant Pool Manager will assist in the operation and management of city-owned pool, including supervision of staff and programs as assigned. In the absence of a Pool Manager, this position will ensure the daily safety, comfort, and satisfaction of all customers using the city's aquatic facility.This information is intended to be descriptive of the principal duties and responsibilities of the position.  The following examples do not identify all duties performed by any single incumbent.
  1. Monitors and maintains swimmer safety at all times by preventing accidents and responding quickly to emergency situations.
  2. Responds to minor and major emergencies providing a high standard of care.
  3. Supervise assigned personnel.  Acting Manager in the absence of Pool Manager.
  4. Assists Recreation Manager and Pool Manager in implementing and following the comprehensive Aquatic Risk Management Program as required by Ellis & Associates and the facility’s Emergency Action Plan. 
  5. Maintains accurate accountability for cash drawers and cash deposits.
  6. Maintains records as required by the Parks and Recreation Department, City, County, and State.
  7. Maintains general appearance, cleanliness, and perform general housekeeping of assigned area
  8. Maintains water safety equipment.
  9. Performs basic life support skills as necessary.
  10. Stays current on skills and required certification through Ellis & Associates.
  11. Maintains the cleaning of the Olympic Pool and related facilities and equipment throughout the duration of the season, especially during peak hours of operation.
  12. Assists in managing inventory of pool supplies, first-aid equipment, and rescue equipment.
  13. Assists in conducting or leads in-service training for staff.
  14. Performs chemical readings on pH and chlorine levels and checks water temperature as scheduled.
  15. Assists with assigned recreation / aquatics programs and special events including but not limited to setting up and tearing down equipment for scheduled recreational activities / events.
  16. Required to answer phone calls and have an understanding of general facility programming and operations.
  17. Responds to requests and inquiries from the public.
  18. Assists with or lead physical conditioning of entire staff, including self.
  19. Assists the Recreation Manager in decision-making concerning facility closures during adverse conditions.
  20. Required to fill in at any and all positions at the pool, as needed.
  21. Maintains inventories, ensures proper care of City property and equipment, and assists with facility security, including locking and securing the premises. 
  22. Responsible for utilizing basic computer skills to complete time entry and assist with software-related tasks for swim lesson scheduling and maintenance. 
  23. Performs other duties as may be assigned.
Education, Certification and Experience Required:
  • Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Some college preferred.
  • Possession of a valid Texas Class C Driver’s License.
  • 20/25 vision or better with corrective lenses.
  • Jeff Ellis & Associates ILTP (International Lifeguard Training Program) License-training provided on-site at the applicant’s expense.
  • Must have completed at least one season as Lifeguard.
  • Experience in water safety.
  • Experience in public relations.
  • Experience planning and conducting recreational activities preferred.
  • Experience in supervising others preferred.
  • Jeff Ellis Swim Instructor certification preferred.
  • Must be bondable. 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent swimming skills.
  • Good supervisory, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize and maintain records, implement oral and written policies and maintain good working relationships with people of all ages.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions from supervisor.
  • Ability to give verbal and physical instructions to swim lesson students.
  • Ability to work with money; adding; subtracting; counting.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and provide technical assistance to assigned staff and other city staff.
  • Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance.

Continuously sits or stands, while looking, listening, and talking while monitoring and maintaining swimmer safety.   Frequently stands, walks, lifts, and carries safety equipment; chairs and tables on the pool deck; pushes/pulls vacuum, broom, and water hoses, and handles equipment; kneels, bends and climbs stairs and guard stands. Occasionally reaches for safety equipment, chairs, and tables on the pool deck, and twists while demonstrating safety moves, swim lessons, and diving instructions. This position is subject to outside environmental conditions, including extreme heat while performing the job.
