Job Summary: Operates equipment at city wastewater plant to purify wastewater in accordance with EPA requirements and standards. Draws wastewater samples and performs basic chemical tests. Performs routine preventative maintenance to plant and equipment. Possesses a Class I, II, or III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator’s license.
Duties/Responsibilities: Operates wastewater treatment pumps and process control equipment to clean city wastewater in accordance with EPA standards and regulatory guidelines; transfers and disposes of sludge, and skims supernatant scum and grease from settling tanks; cleans bar screens; monitors charts and gauges and records readings.
Monitors lift stations on a scheduled basis to evaluate facility operations; checks charts and gauges, starts and stops pumps and other equipment; operates truck to drive to lift stations.
Performs minor repairs and routine maintenance to pumps and other equipment; notes major malfunctions and calls for skilled repairs as necessary; assists in performing skilled repairs as required; makes minor repairs to pumps, motors, and other equipment; lubricates motors, blowers and other moving parts; cleans and paints equipment and facility.
Collects samples and performs routine laboratory tests as prescribed such as dissolved and biological oxygen demand analysis, PH analysis, etc.; adjusts chemical feeds as necessary to maintain required levels; prepares chemical solutions and distilled wastewater; cleans autoclave glassware and prepares bacteria for testing; monitors and records chemical amounts and totals and averages test results.
Inspects wastewater plant on a scheduled basis to ensure proper operating condition and compliance with regulatory requirements; reviews plant operating problems with Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent.
Maintains plant in a clean orderly condition; sweeps and mops floors; paints equipment, facilities and other structures; plows and shovels snow; cleans lab and office and performs other routine housekeeping and related maintenance tasks.
Performs required recordkeeping responsibilities including timecards, overtime sheets, completion of forms, etc.
All other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Required Skills/Abilities: Knowledge of Class I, II, or III wastewater plant operations; basic chemistry; wastewater purification methods and equipment; large capacity pump operation and related equipment; state and local laws and regulations relating to wastewater treatment; work hazards and safety precautions; basic mathematical principles; laboratory equipment and instruments.
Ability to read and interpret gauges; analyze and interpret data to reach conclusions regarding chemical adjustments and other plant routine operating requirements; conducts chemical tests maintains basic work records; develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates and general public; perform physical labor for extended periods of time; work occasionally under adverse conditions; add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers; recognize plant operating problems.
Skill in operation of wastewater plant operating equipment; pump and equipment preventative maintenance.
Equipment Operated: Pumps; chemical feeders; chemical testing equipment.
Education and Experience: An appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and abilities. An example of an acceptable qualification is: High School Diploma, GED or equivalent, including coursework in chemistry and natural sciences. Possession of Class I, II, or III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator’s License. Possession of any other certificates required by the Ohio EPA and Ohio Department of Health.
