CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY

Under general supervision, assists with the completion of construction projects within the City's public roadways, rights-of-way and easements. Incumbents are responsible for contract and permit construction inspection for projects in progress or as completed to ensure project is completed according to contract specifications and City standards. Incumbents work as part of a team and are not expected to serve as a lead worker over other similar positions.

WORK SCHEDULE
The initial work schedule for this classification will be full-time, Monday through Friday and may be eligible for an alternative work schedule with every other Friday off work. Early mornings, overnight, evenings and weekend work may be occasionally required. Overtime may be occasionally required. This classification is non-exempt under the FLSA.
Duration of employment is approximately 4 months. Salary is dependent on qualifications.
Examples of Work Performed (Illustrative Only)
1. Schedules, organizes and implements the field inspection activities for construction within City roadways, rights-of-way and easements including prioritizing work, scheduling staff, and coordinating and implementing redesigns that may change the scope and resulting cost of projects.

2. Responds to public complaints and requests for information relating to impacts of construction and negotiate the issues and/or refers to appropriate personnel.

3. Performs inspection activities as necessary to support the completion of public works construction projects to project specifications and City standards. Maintains records as required.

4. Monitors traffic control at project site to ensure compliance with traffic codes and/or use of uniform traffic control devices. May stop work of project for failure to comply.

7. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Employment Standards

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology or a closely related field and three or more years of previous experience in public works construction inspection; or an equivalent combination of education and experience to provide sufficient evidence of successful performance of the essential elements of the job such as those listed above.
  • A valid State of Washington driver's license with a driving record free of serious or frequent violations is required.

Supplemental Requirements

Physical Requirements:
Work is performed mostly in an outdoor/field setting. outdoor work is required in the inspection of various land use developments, construction sites, or public works facilities. The employee works near moving mechanical parts, in confined spaces, and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to hot, cold, wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, vibration, and traffic hazards. Sufficient powers of observation are required to inspect construction projects and observe the work of contractors and others. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

To perform the essential functions of the job, incumbents must be able to perform the following:

Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
This position is not subject to health or retirement benefits. But, this position is eligible for Washington State Paid Sick Leave to accrue 1 hour for every 40 hours worked.
