If you like working with your hands, operating heavy equipment, and seeing the results of a hard day’s work — we want you on our team. Join the City of Keene’s Highway Crew as a Motor Equipment Operator II and help keep our streets, sidewalks, drainage systems, and neighborhoods safe and moving.
What you’ll do:
Note: This position is subject to recall and stand-by duty during non-regular working hours, weekends, and holidays. This position should be able to respond within 60 minutes, depending on weather conditions, to staff the work site. There is a considerable amount of overtime during winter months. In addition, this position is subject to federal commercial driver’s license (CDL) drug and alcohol requirements.
Minimum qualifications:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or 1-3 years of related experience and/or training. A valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with tank endorsement is required and the Level II Roads Scholar Certificate desired.
Pay and Benefits:
During the 6-month probationary period, the pay rate for this position is $24.28 per hour. Upon successful completion of the probationary period, this position will move to the regular pay schedule which consists of pay steps and hourly rates ranging from $25.25- $30.71 per hour.

What you’ll do:
- Operate heavy equipment and power tools
- Patch roads, seal cracks, and repair curbs
- Repair concrete and asphalt sidewalks
- Plow, sand, and salt roads during winter
- Maintain drainage systems and clean up after storms
- Clear fallen trees, prune vegetation, and tackle landscaping
- Sweep streets, rake leaves, and keep public spaces clean
- Perform equipment maintenance and minor repairs
- Assist with traffic control and road projects
- Repair property damage caused by snowplows
- Step up to supervise highway crews when needed
