Senior Construction Inspector

Job Description

 

Safety Sensitive:  Yes.  This position is safety-sensitive meaning this is a position in which a momentary lapse of attention may result in grave and immediate danger to the public.  Because of this, a pre-employment drug screen is required.

Reports To Chief Engineer

Location: Engineering, City Hall.  300. S Church St.


 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

The purpose of this safety sensitive (SS) position is to inspect construction projects to help ensure that public improvements and construction comply with local ordinances and standards.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Conduct on-site inspections of public and private development projects to ensure compliance with city standards and plan specifications related to streets, sidewalks, bridges, and drainage systems. This duty is performed daily.

 

2. Conduct on-site inspections of construction projects within city rights-of-way and easements to ensure compliance with the city construction standards. This duty is performed daily.

 

3. Conduct on-site driveway inspections to ensure compliance with city standards. This duty is performed daily.

 

4. Maintain daily log of work performed and inspections conducted. This duty is performed daily.

 

5. Prepare inspection reports. This duty is performed monthly.

 

6. Collect field data for public works and capital improvement projects. This duty is performed monthly.

 

7. Investigate public requests. This duty is performed monthly.

 

8. Operates a City vehicle in the performance of essential job functions.

 

9. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school or GED, plus specialized schooling and/or on the job education in a specific skill area; e.g. data processing, clerical/administrative, equipment operation, etc, plus 2 years related experience and/or training, and 2 years related management experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small group situations with customers, clients, general public and other employees of the organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS

Ability to utilize common sense understanding in order to carry out written, oral or diagrammed instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving several known variables in situations of a routine nature.
