Education/Experience:

Requires experience in competitive swimming, through individual competition and/or coaching, sufficient to be fully knowledgeable of approved competitive requirements for freestyle, back, breast and butterfly strokes; appropriate knowledge of variety of drills and activities to enhance swimmer technique; and the ability to work and coach effectively with youth ranging in ages from 5 to 17. Experience with teaching swim lessons to youth is preferred.


Position Summary:


This is a seasonal swim coach position. The Youth swim coach is responsible for providing general swimming instruction as well as training swimmers in freestyle, back, breast and butterfly strokes to compete in sanctioned competitive swim meets. Coaches must attend all practices and swim meets, maintain appropriate records, address parental questions, and set up/replace all equipment used during practice.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Practices:

Coaches are expected to be at every swim practice (roughly 40) and coach their assigned group and assist with all swimmers on the pool deck. Coaches must arrive 15 minutes before practice to place lane lines and perform any other needed set up and to stay after practice for 15 minutes to put up equipment. Coach should address parental questions during this before and after time, if it becomes something more in depth, the coach should direct the parent to the SISA representative. Generally, each coach will work with the same swimmers each practice. There will be many times where groups merge and coaches should try to get to know each swimmer's name. Coaches should share any concerns with the SISA representative to take to SISA meetings.


Coaches should spend ample time working on each stroke and helping swimmers improve their technique and strength in the water. Swimmers’ “illegal” strokes should be identified and corrected so that the swimmer may achieve the ability to effectively compete in the championship meet.


Swim meets
:

Coaches must attend every meet including champs and help get swimmers where they need to be, watch their swimmers’ races, and give reflection to swimmers when needed. Swim meet set up begins at 4:30 p.m. for home meets and for away meets coaches are expected to be at location by 5:00 p.m. for 5:30 p.m. warm up time.


Coaches will need to spend an extra 15 minutes after practice the last practice before a meet (likely Friday morning) to complete meet entries. The head coach or SISA representative will put the entries into the computer and send for the meet.


Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as apparent or as delegated including record keeping of swimmers names and swim results in computer tracking system.

Organizes the swim activities to minimize the likelihood of an accident or other unsafe situation. Checks for and reports potential hazards. Instructs others on appropriate safe behavior in and around the aquatic settings.


Relationship Building: Maintains an open, approachable manner, and treats others fairly and respectfully. Preserves others’ self-confidence and dignity, and shows regard for their opinions. Seeks to resolve confrontations and disagreements constructively. Focuses on the situation, issues, or behaviors, rather than the people.


Accountability/Dependability:
Shows up to swim meets and practice sessions on time, and follows instructions, policies, and procedures. Stays focused on tasks in spite of distractions and interruptions. Makes the best use of available time and resources.


Development/Continued Learning: Applies own talents to coaching assignments, and hones the competencies needed in current job. Looks for better ways to perform routine aspects of job. Seeks and acquires new competencies, work methods, ideas, and information that will improve own efficiency and effectiveness as a swim coach.

While performing this work, the employee requires the ability to sit, stand or walk for long periods of time throughout the workday; must be able to swim and perform Shallow Water Attendant duties/rescue; requires manual dexterity and vision sufficient to perform Attendant duties and pool maintenance; and requires hearing and speech sufficient to understand and clearly communicate in conversations, in person and in loud disruptive environments. The employee must have adequate vision including depth perception and peripheral vision to clearly view occupants’ activity in swimming pool and surrounding pool area. In emergency/patron safety situations, the employee must be able to lift/move over a 100 pounds.

Working conditions require the employee to work outside, in and around a public pool/aquatic center. Employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather extremes; direct sunlight, loud noises from pool guests, toxic chemicals used in maintaining public pool and risk of drowning.,
