PRINCIPAL ENGINEERING AIDE
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This work involves responsibility for the performance of moderately difficult sub-professional engineering work. This position differs from that of Senior Engineering Aide by virtue of its higher degree of responsibility and independence. Principal Engineering Aide engages in the day-to-day implementation and supervision of projects. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Civil Engineer of a higher status. Direct supervision is exercised over a small group of Engineering Aides of lower levels. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Plans and designs projects of moderate size and complexity and determines needed materials for construction;
- Assists higher-level engineering staff with planning and designing projects of larger size and complexity;
- Plans and supervises activities of field survey parties;
- Prepares cost and material estimates of construction projects;
- Assists a higher-level Civil Engineer in the preparation of bid specifications;
- Calculates rights-of-way;
- Assists in inspection of projects under construction;
- Determines recommended speed of curves, intersections, area speeds, linear speeds, and lay out placing of signs accordingly.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the principles of civil engineering and elementary mathematics; working knowledge of engineering practices as applied to road construction; ability to design moderately difficult engineering projects; ability to use engineering instruments and mathematical tables and to make trigonometric calculations; ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions; resourcefulness; accuracy; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Promotional:
County of Chautauqua - Candidates must be permanently employed at the Chautauqua County Department of Public Facilities as a Senior Engineering Aide or Senior Engineering Aide (CAD) in the competitive class for one (1) year immediately preceding the date of appointment and/or the date of the written test.
City of Jamestown - Candidates must be currently serving and have served permanently in the competitive class as an Engineering Technician for one (1) year on a continuously basis immediately preceding the date of appointment or the date of the written test.
Open Competitive: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and either:
A. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State Registered College with a Bachelor’s degree in a field closely related to Engineering Technology; OR
B. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State Registered College with an Associate’s degree in a field closely related to Engineering Technology and four (4) years experience in sub-professional civil engineering work; OR
C. Six (6) years experience in sub-professional engineering work.
