The Public Works Department is actively seeking for multiple Traffic Signal Repairer.

In addition to base pay, additional compensation/incentives include:

  • Overtime pay – 1.5x base hourly rate for all hours worked over 40 in a workweek
  • Shift differential pay
  • Hazardous Duty Pay
  • Bucket/Lift pay for hours worked in bucket/lift
  • Annual Shoe Allowance

This is skilled craft work in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signal system equipment. The work requires knowledge of the techniques, methods, and practices used to install, maintain and repair traffic and allied signal system equipment. Contacts require courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others. The work is patterned involving similar situations and generally requires only the choice of the correct procedure. The work is performed outdoors where risks and hazards are substantial, but they are known, somewhat predictable and most controllable. Operates power, mechanical, and hand tools and motor vehicles including vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 8,000 pounds. The physical demands consist of walking, standing, sitting, bending, digging and moving or lifting equipment and tools weighing up to 85 pounds and including the requirement to work from a bucket truck near high voltage wires. May be assigned to work shift hours and respond to emergency calls. The work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are varied and subject to practices and procedures, but the worker is permitted latitude to set priorities subject to the superior's approval.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs traffic signal system equipment.
  • Locates, diagnoses and corrects malfunctions in solid state, digital and analog traffic control equipment such as traffic lights, time clocks, traffic signal controllers, load switches, loop detectors, loops, pedestrian push buttons and school zone flashing lights.
  • Installs new traffic signal control cabinets using multi-conductor color-coded traffic signal cables.
  • Programs controllers, monitors, and associated equipment for use as replacements for defective equipment.
  • Inspects work reports to insure completion of work within an assigned geographical area.
  • Determines traffic signal coordination between intersections from time-space diagrams.
  • Performs necessary repairs and preventative maintenance on traffic signal equipment.
  • Checks relays, controller timing, and wiring.
  • Inspects traffic signal equipment installed by private contractors for compliance with FDOT and COJ specifications.
  • Assists in construction of traffic control devices by signal construction crews.
  • Operates lift trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 8,000 pounds.
  • Trains, assigns and reviews the work of assigned personnel.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's Competencies.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Knowledge of the techniques, methods, and practices used in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic and allied signal system equipment.
  • Knowledge of the materials, tools, and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signal system equipment.
  • Knowledge of solid-state and digital circuitry and controllers.
  • Knowledge of the principles and theory of electricity.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to interpret time-space diagrams for traffic signal coordination.
  • Ability to replace or repair signal cable.
  • Ability to distinguish colors in wiring and cables.
  • Ability to lift, load, unload and transport traffic signal heads weighing up to 85 pounds.
  • Ability to replace or repair span wire or signal cable from a lift truck platform.
  • Ability to read and apply written job-related materials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to operate power, mechanical, and hand tools.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles including vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 8,000 pounds.
  • A three (3) year of education and/or experience in electricity, electronics or traffic signal installation (maintenance or repair). 
  • Must be free from color blindness.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:   
  • A valid Class E Driver's License is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.
  • Must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain and maintain during employment in this class the City of Jacksonville Certification as a Public Driver.
  • I.M.S.A. Level I Traffic Signal Certification must be successfully completed within twelve (12) months from the date of probationary appointment and Level II certification must be successfully completed within twenty-four (24) months from the date of probationary appointment.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:  
  • The probationary period for this class is six (6) months.  
  • This classification performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to pre-employment and random drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonville's Drug Free Workplace Policy (Directive 0401).
