This position performs responsible skilled and technical work assisting in the inspection, repair, and maintenance of electrical substation equipment; does related work as required.  Work is performed under the immediate supervision of a Relay Technician.

Essential Job Functions
  • Assists with the inspection, maintenance, and repair of substation and related equipment. This includes circuit breakers, transformers, circuit switchers, switchgear, disconnect switches, lightning arrestors, hook switches, ground connections, on-load tap changers, battery banks, capacitor banks, and relay devices.
  • Records meter readings at individual substations on an established schedule. These readings include voltage, current, circuit breaker operations and condition, transformer status (oil levels, temperature and overall condition), battery bank condition and status, and safety equipment inspection.
  • Inspects components related to distribution substations such as battery recharging equipment, voltage regulators, over current relays, reclosing relays, switchgear, re-closers, and circuit breakers.
  • Operates aerial devices, digger derrick, cable tension equipment, trencher, and related equipment. Climbs utility poles. 
  • Maintains substation grounds, fences, and buildings. 
  • Performs electrical troubleshooting on various substation equipment issues as required. 
  • Performs general substation maintenance such as weed abatement and cleaning of facilities.
  • Tests transformers for PCB contamination.
  • Runs conduit, pulls wire, and performs basic electrical work. 
  • Serves on stand-by and works trouble calls as assigned.
  • Maintains, cleans, and repairs tools and cleans job sites after job completion.
  • Follows safety rules and regulations and uses safe work practices.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent.  

Special Qualifications:
Must obtain CPR certification and a CDL driver's license valid in the State of Florida within six months of employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Skill in the use of equipment and tools.
  • Ability and willingness to learn to operate technical equipment and practices necessary for substation maintenance and operation.
  • Ability to keep written records.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions including sketches and diagrams.
  • Ability to recognize malfunctions in equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Physical Demands
The work is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.  Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: 
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending terrain, ladders, stairs, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Hearing: Required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Manual Dexterity: Picking, pinching, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward, or outward.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Vocal Communication: Required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Visual Acuity: Required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts a tor within arm’s length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
Work Environment
The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.
