What are the responsibilities and job description for the Police Cadet position at City of Inver Grove Heights?
Police cadets work under the direction of the on-duty Police Sergeant. This is a non-sworn, limited-term position within the police department, which does not require licensing as a peace officer. It is anticipated that the Cadet(s) will average 16 hours per week. Police Cadet duties include communicating with the public, assisting sworn police personnel with needed tasks, assisting in the coordination of animal control functions and enforcement of certain parking ordinances of the City of Inver Grove Heights. Work is subject to check/review and observation on a periodic basis (including a one-year probationary period) with review of written reports for completeness and form.

- Utilizing a community-orientated policing philosophy, work with community members and sworn police personnel to identify public safety issues, problems and concerns, and to resolve the problems and concerns. Under supervision conduct safety/crime prevention programs.
- Respond to animal complaints; patrol for strays or animals at large. Prepare police reports on recovered or stray animals; dangerous or potentially dangerous dog actions; transport at-large animals to the city's contracted impoundment center; verify ownership for return. Be familiar with or have the capability to use and operate available equipment pertinent to animal control. Must appear in court and testify when necessary.
- Work with property and evidence tech on found property.
- Provide traffic control and parking enforcement, as directed by sworn police personnel.
- Perform residential home checks, as directed.
- Assist with the delivery of department vehicles for repair or maintenance.
- Submit thorough reports when required or as directed.
- Perform enforcement of certain authorized parking and related offenses.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver's license that is accepted by the State of Minnesota. Applicants must NOT have taken or passed the MN Board of P.O.S.T. licensing exam.
- Must submit to a thorough background investigation
- Must not have been convicted of any disqualifiers under MN State Statutes (Section 609.2-609.7) or any felony or crime that would be a felony if it had been committed in the state of Minnesota.
- Must be deemed mentally and physically able to perform the duties of the position.
Education:
Must be accepted/enrolled into a regionally accredited college/university law enforcement program (not required to be registered for classes). Pursuit of a Bachelor's degree will be highly encouraged.
NOTE: THE INVER GROVE HEIGHTS POLICE CADET PROGRAM IS INTENDED FOR CANDIDATES SEEKING A DEGREE AND CAREER IN LAW ENFORCEMENT. POLICE CADET POSITIONS ARE FOR A MAXIMUM OF THREE YEARS.
Police cadets, who become POST license eligible, may be considered for promotional opportunities to the position of police officer (recruit) if an opening exists. The Inver Grove Heights Police Department will assess a cadet's promotional suitability after completion of academic training, based on, but not limited to, field performance, assignment rotations, and field training officer and patrol sergeant recommendations.
Work Environment:
Working in and driving in extreme weather conditions. Work requires attention to safety procedures, practice in accordance with departmental policies.
Physical Job Requirements:
Employee is required to frequently stand, walk, listen, and hear; occasionally reach with hands and arms, and use hands/fingers dexterously; sit, kneel, stoop, and crawl. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Performing the duties of this job require the use of assigned equipment. Employee must be able to work a flexible work schedule which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays, as directed.
