Job Summary

Position is responsible for exercising engineering and technical expertise while providing professional knowledge pertaining to the critical operational functions of the traffic systems in the Department. This position requires a high degree of initiative and independent judgment. Critical decisions will have to be made without the guidance or benefit of direct supervision. Decisions can impact the City of Indianapolis, City officials and policies. Position reports to Senior Traffic Systems Engineer.

  • Provides technical support (on and off site) of DPW staff in analyzing and implementing signal system timing plans using latest hardware and software available
  • Assists in providing technical review of consultant developed signal plans and related material.
  • Assists and develops alternate engineering solutions to complex/technical problems
  • Participates in improving operations according to best practices
  • Performs field reviews of signal timing operations and recommend changes to the department staff
  • Develops and improves methodologies utilizing existing IT infrastructure including signal timing plans, transportation trends, and evaluation of programs/projects
  • Supports the operation of the 1200 traffic signals under DPW responsibility
  • Assists with the preparation of annual priority lists for modernization of traffic control equipment
  • Assists in the development of standards and specifications
  • Assists in developing and coordinating the development of computerized transportation models
  • Assists in developing operational manuals and guides governing the use and programming of field hardware in compliance with federal guidelines and state and local laws
  • Research new telecommunication technologies that can offer cost savings and improved services to the Department
  • Assist in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for assigned programs
  • Serves as a liaison for the Traffic Section with other local departments, divisions, and outside agencies
  • Provides technical and professional engineering support services relative to assigned area of responsibility
  • Prepares difficult special engineering studies and reports
  • Performs special assignments on engineering problems as necessary
  • Assistance in field support and troubleshooting both over the phone and at busy intersections and field test sites
  • Must maintain confidentiality at all times

Minimum Job Requirements and Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate in the state of Indiana with up to four (0-4) years of experience or technical degree/certification. The position requires extensive knowledge of City, State, and FHWA policies and specifications as they relate to construction of City infrastructure and other pertinent documents including the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). The position requires excellent oral and written skills in addition to excellent conflict resolution skills. Must have broad experience with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and PowerPoint Must have a valid driver's license.


Preferred Job Requirements and Qualifications

Professional Engineer (PE) preferred. Experience with computer networks is preferred.

  4. Tasks require the ability to perceive and hear sounds and see visual cues or signals
  5. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing
  6. Some task may require outdoor work
