Deputy Fire Marshal II (Current IFD employees only)

Agency Summary  
The purpose and mission of the Indianapolis Fire Department is to provide emergency and fire protection services for the City of Indianapolis and surrounding areas. Firefighters are also trained as paramedics, emergency medical technicians, extrication specialists, top water and rescue divers, confined space, trench rescue and as hazardous materials technicians to help save lives, protect property, and the environment. The agency is able to do this by cultivating a productive, collaborative, and compliant work environment in order for our workforce to meet the needs of the constituents of Indianapolis and Marion County.  

Job Summary
The position is responsible completing annual fire and life safety inspections of all building types throughout the IFD district. Incumbent in this position looks for fire hazards and inspects fire related equipment. Incumbents will provide fire and life safety training and educational classes to children and adults in a variety of settings. Position assumes after hours details of code enforcement and victim assistance along with responding to serious fires at any time. Incumbent in this position will adhere to agency’s policies and procedures with some independent judgment based on experience and training may be required due to the nature of the position. Position reports to the Captain, Asst Fire Marshal.

• Enforce building and fire codes.
• Pre and final inspections of new construction or renovation of buildings.
• Issues violations and with non-compliance seeks redress through the court.
• Fire protection acceptance testing.
• Responds to complaints brought by constituents or firefighters.
• Provide fire protection systems training to firefighters.
• Specialty training for high-risk occupancy buildings.
• Educate building owners and property management teams in fire prevention measures, fire protection systems and building code guidelines.
• Liaison with the board of health, code enforcement, DPW, prosecutors, state fire marshal, OSHA, and community action groups.
• Ability to teach and effectively communicate to target audiences.
• Develop, maintain, and deliver ongoing programs to educate various target audiences in fire prevention, injury prevention, and life safety.
• Facilitates and serves in public events to maintain fire prevention regulations of public safety.
• Assist in fire prevention education with community outreach events.
• Must be able to operate and maintain all educational props and equipment, including wearing firefighter gear as warranted.
• Continuously maintain a broad knowledge of Survive Alive, the firefighters’ gear and equipment, data, activities, and anything else related to fire life and safety division, and community risk reduction.
• Develop and improve current educational programs, including the car seat inspection program.
• Trained in smoke alarm installation.
• Creates and maintains project documentation and requirements through spreadsheets, diagrams, process maps and documents.
• Prepares and manages the smoke alarm installation events and IFD apparatus scheduling for community events.

Knowledge of rules and regulations of department, fire prevention, pre-planning, and inspections. Must have the ability to interact with a wide variety of government and private sector agencies. Must be able to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.  Must be customer service oriented and have strong organizational and communication skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Office products preferred. Must be able to pass state certification of Inspector I or II within 12 months (1 year) of hire. Must maintain working knowledge of state, local, and NFPA codes. Must be able to acquire state certification for public fire and life safety educator within two (2) years of holding the position. Must have the ability to manage multiple projects, work under stress, and the ability to exercise professional judgment and decision making. Must maintain a valid driver’s license. 

Preferred Job Requirements and Qualifications
Associate degree in Fire Science, Building Inspections, Architect, or a related field with three (3) years of work experience related to the position preferred. Knowledge of rules and regulations, fire prevention, pre-planning, and inspections. Must have mathematical skills and be able to understand blueprint specifications and diagrams. Must have the ability to interact with a wide variety of government and private sector agencies. Preferable to pass state certification of Inspector I or II within 24 months (2 years) of hire. Must maintain working knowledge of state, local, and NFPA codes. Must pass the state certification of Public Educator I and II within 12 months (1 year) of hire. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Must maintain a valid driver’s license.
