The Seasonal Education Assistant performs the full range of activities required to facilitate revenue-based zoo education programs, program animal handling and occasional animal husbandry assistance. In addition, all staff is responsible for maintaining a safe, healthy, clean, and attractive Zoo environment and providing courteous assistance to participants and guests. This employee should possess excellent education/interpretive skills, guest relations, organizational, and communication skills.
A Day in the Life:
- Under the direction of the Education and Volunteer Coordinator, develop, design, and implement creative, interactive, and age-appropriate educational activities for zoo campers between the age of 4-14, prepare program-specific learning-related materials.
- Ensure a fun, educational and safe environment for children.
- Conduct engaging and age-appropriate zoo tours, animal encounters, art & craft projects, and other activities.
- Safely handle and present wild/exotic animals.
- Setting up and storing program supplies.
- Assigning duties to and coordinating teen volunteers.
- Facilitate early camper check-in and afternoon check-out, including with camper´s parents when appropriate.
- Follow guidelines as outlined for medical situations, behavior problems and other camper situations.
- Respond to guest questions and educate guests about the care and handling of animals.
- Other duties as assigned.
What you'll need for success:
- EDUCATION: A high school diploma or GED is preferred. Some college credit or a degree in education, biology, environmental science, or a related field is preferred.
- EXPERIENCE: 1 year experience as an educator, program facilitator, camp counselor or similar related work experience required.
- LICENSE: A valid Driver's License is required.
- Must be at least 18 years old to apply.
