About our Department:
Huntsville Animal Services provides sheltering, enforcement, and prevention services for Huntsville and the unincorporated areas of Madison County. In partnership with community organizations, Animal Services provides a safety net for lost and homeless pets and is committed to sustaining the City’s goal of finding live outcomes for at least 90 percent of the companion animals that enter the shelter each year. We enforce animal regulations, including state mandated rabies control and all local municipal ordinances, and we are focused on prevention-based service provisions aimed at assisting citizens in complying with regulations.
Animal Services Surgical Assistant Position Overview:
Assists the doctor in ensuring high quality of surgical care. Responsible for bringing animals into the surgery area for induction of anesthesia, prepping for surgery, including carrying sedated animals to the surgery tables. Responsible for moving animals onto the beach (recovery area) post operatively and monitoring postoperative patients. Will be responsible for assisting technicians by restraining animals for venipuncture and intubation. Will return animals to their proper kennels when recovered from anesthesia. Will clean, pack surgical instruments, and sterilize them using the autoclave. Responsible for keeping the prep and surgery suite stocked and clean.
Qualifications and Necessary Special Requirements:
High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency and a minimum of two years’ experience in a veterinary clinic/hospital as a kennel attendant or veterinary assistant.
Valid Driver’s License with acceptable driving record.
Euthanasia certification within eleven (11) months of hire/promotion.

Salary : $34,112 - $57,824
