Distribution/Collection Apprentice and Journeyman

Performs a wide range of skilled and semi-skilled duties and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair maintenance and replacement of city water supply, sewer/storm lines, treatment or distribution facilities and system.

  • Reports to Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent
  • Responsible for maintaining effective working relationships with other city employees or officials and all members of the general public
  • Responsible to have a friendly, positive attitude & excellent customer/community service skills
  • Responsible to work with continuous and obvious attitude to serve the City of Huntington
  • Inspects and/or repairs elements of the water supply/ sewer collection and distribution system at frequent intervals to ensure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly.
  • Maintains a variety of records relating to inspections, water maintenance activity, water supply treatment, sewer/storm maintenance
  • Determine the location of water, sewer and storm lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation.
  • Responds to complaints regarding water leaks, pressure loss or no water, sewer and storm issues, evaluates situation and report's findings to supervisor.
  • Contacts residents and business owners in area where services will be discontinued and explains when services will be shut off and how soon it will be turned back on.
  • Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
  • Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to the supervisor; cleans equipment.
  • Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, pavement cutting, ditch digging; backfilling.
  • Performs service as part of a crew, on the distribution/collection system including: repair/replace/install of water and sewer mains, service lines, fittings, taps, valves, hydrants, meters, flushes water mains and hydrants, clean and flush sewer mains and storm lines.
  • Assists in the training of new employees to increase their skills.
  • Operates light and medium-sized construction and power equipment, such as: backhoe/loader, dump truck, vactor truck, various size pumps, camera truck, etc.
  • Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, gravel, dirt, concrete, cold mix, sand, etc.
  • This position is subject the City of Huntington's Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace Policy which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing and follow-up testing.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

o Some working knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance and construction.

o Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.

o Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; Ability to work safely around vehicles and machinery; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

o Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

o Some basic computer knowledge.

o Weekly on call rotation.

  • Hold and maintain a valid CDL Class A Driver's license
  • CDL Tanker Endorsement
  • GED or High School Diploma
  • Can test and acquire a Class DSL License with the State of Indiana after 1 year on the distribution crew and receive a one-time lump sum payment of $1000 and $.40 an hour raise for this License

Motor vehicles including: dump truck, pick-up truck, utility truck, lift truck, backhoe, sewer vactor, sewer camera, water vactor, valve turning machine, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, compressors, sanders, grinders, generators, pumps, gauges, common hand tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, calculator, computer, etc.

The employee is frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
