NATURE OF WORK
This is manual labor and skilled work, including operation of light to heavy-duty trucks in construction, maintenance and repair work within the Street Division of the Public Works Department. Work involves performance of manual tasks of more than ordinary difficulty requiring some skills or special knowledge acquired through experience. Work includes operation of light to heavy-duty trucks as a regular part of assigned duties. The employee may occasionally operate other equipment on a training, relief or temporary basis. Work is performed and reviewed through inspection of work while in progress and upon completion by the Working Foreman.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
· Graduation from high school or GED; considerable experience in the operation of heavy-duty equipment; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
· Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) from state in which employee resides.
· 24-hour availability.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Participates in the construction, maintenance and repair of public works facilities; cleans road surfaces and applies and rakes patching materials; assists in building forms and pouring and finishing concrete; maintains or assists in the repair of curbs, gutters and culverts.
· Drives light to heavy-duty trucks in hauling such materials as gravel, asphalt, salt, sand and street sweepings; performs manual work in clearing work sites of debris.
· Loads and unloads materials by hand; sweeps with hand tools.
· Performs snow removal, sanding and salting of roadways and street cleaning tasks when necessary; installs and repairs tire chains.
· Performs clean-up duties after parades; may pick up trash and clean restrooms at public facilities.
· Responsible for maintaining and cleaning trucks.
· May operate grass mowing equipment and maintain mowing attachments; may be required to remove dead animals from street for disposal at animal shelter.
· May operate other pieces of light, medium or heavy equipment in the absence of regular equipment operators.
· Promotes courtesy and professionalism throughout the City of Huntington.
· Other duties as assigned.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
· Considerable knowledge of the general practices applied in the care and safe operation of a wide variety of heavy construction and maintenance equipment.
· Considerable knowledge of regulations pertaining to the operation of equipment upon the roadways.
· Skill in the operation of a wide variety of heavy equipment.
· Ability to service and maintain assigned equipment.
· Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and/or diagrams.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Motor vehicle, telephone, radio, backhoe, end loader and other related equipment.

The employee is frequently exposed to loud noise and heavy traffic. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
