Position Summary

Performs allogeneic donor phlebotomy, automated apheresis procedures and draws samples for HLA tissue typing, serology retest and research projects. Works in both donor center and blood drive environments. Participates in quality assurance activities to continually ensure safety of the blood supply and provide the highest quality of service and care. Must maintain a high standard for conscientious, courteous, and enthusiastic service to internal and external customers, and the public in general. Consistently deliver service in a timely, accurate, professional, and friendly manner. Must demonstrate a high level of problem solving skills.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Performs allogeneic whole blood and donor apheresis procedures according to Donor Apheresis Center standard operating procedures.
  • Performs donor screening interviews and evaluates donors for suitability/eligibility according to established criteria and standard operating procedure.
  • Recognizes donor reactions during phlebotomy and apheresis procedures and treats according to standard operating procedure.
  • Maintains complete and accurate records of Donor Center procedures and activities including, but not limited to donor records, QC of equipment and facilities, error/incident/quality monitoring reports, and customer complaints.
  • Regularly participates in off-site blood drives, and assists with setup, breakdown and other mobile operations duties as assigned.
  • Utilizes Safetrace computer system for donor registration and donor information entry.
  • Adheres to administration policies and department standard operating procedures to ensure consistency in the performance of established procedures and eliminate variances that will affect the safety, potency and purity of blood and blood components as well as work efficiencies.
  • Reviews pertinent department Standard Operational Procedures annually and as needed.
  • Participates in standard operating procedure validations and recommends changes prior to implementation.
  • Participates in quality assurance activities to continually ensure safety of the blood supply and provide high quality service to internal and external customers.
  • Maintains knowledge of rationale and technique of blood collection and apheresis.
  • Maintains required competencies, CPR and annual safety certifications.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and quality control on facility equipment as assigned; reports outliers to supervisor.
  • Prioritizes workflow, readily adapts to changes in assignment, completes work in a timely manner.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

Minimum Education:

  • High School or equivalent.


Minimum Experience:

  • 2 years previous donor/patient care and blood center experience as a donor phlebotomist.


Req. Certification/Licensure:

  • CA Certified phlebotomist
  • Current BLS (through American Heart Association)


Preferred Education:

  • Post High School/Health or Life Sciences


Pref. Certification/Licensure:

  • M.A., EMT, or CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) certificate or BS in Life Sciences.
