General Function:
The Electrical Inspector is responsible for overseeing and directing all electrical inspection activities to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulations. This position plays a critical leadership role in the enforcement of the Florida Building Code, Florida Electrical Code (NFPA 70), and local ordinances, including Miami-Dade County Code Chapter 8.
The Electrical Inspector supervises a team of inspectors, coordinates inspection schedules, provides expert guidance on complex electrical matters, and represents the authority having jurisdiction in regulatory and legal matters related to electrical code enforcement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Lead and manage the electrical inspection division, including supervising Electrical Inspectors and Plans Examiners.
  • Oversee and ensure compliance with the Florida Building Code, the Florida Electrical Code (NFPA 70), and all applicable local codes and amendments.
  • Review and approve electrical plans, permits, and inspection reports for compliance with code and safety standards.
  • Provide technical guidance to staff, contractors, engineers, architects, and the public regarding electrical codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Conduct complex or high-profile inspections as needed and provide expert analysis of code interpretations and enforcement decisions.
  • Serve as the electrical code authority for the jurisdiction, including participation in hearings, code reviews, and appeals processes as required.
  • Coordinate with other departments, agencies, and stakeholders to ensure efficient permitting and inspection operations.
  • Maintain documentation, records, and reports consistent with regulatory and operational requirements.
  • Ensure all staff maintain current certifications and continuing education in accordance with BORA and State of Florida regulations.
  • Represent the jurisdiction at professional meetings, industry events, and code development forums.
  • Stay current on code updates, emerging technologies, and industry best practices.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Type of Appointment/Work hours:
  • Full-time/Regular in-person position.
  • Standard workweek, which is forty (40) hours of work per week usually consisting of five (5) days of eight (8) hours per day. The workday may be varied for the efficient delivery of public service.
  • Will be required to work other than the standard workweek on occasion, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Will be required to work occasional overtime or shift assignments, if applicable.
  • Designated as essential personnel.

Requirements:


  • Must meet the requirements for Chief Electrical Inspector as established in Miami-Dade County Code Sec. 8-21.2 or equivalent local code.
  • Certified or eligible for certification by the Miami-Dade County Board of Rules and Appeals (BORA) as a Chief Electrical Inspector in the Electrical discipline.
  • Possession of, or eligibility for, a State of Florida electrical contractor license or certification.
  • Valid State of Florida certifications as both Electrical Plans Examiner, and Electrical Inspector, issued by the Building Code Administrators & Inspectors Board (BCAIB).
  • At least five (5) years of experience in electrical inspection, electrical contracting, or a closely related field, including supervisory or administrative responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of Florida Building Code (FBC), Florida Electrical Code (NFPA 70), Local amendments, and Miami-Dade County Chapter 8.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with the ability to travel to inspection sites as required.
  • Must be able to maintain all required continuing education and certifications under state and local guidelines.
  • Must possess one or more of the following, or equivalent as accepted by the jurisdiction or BORA:
    • Florida Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.)
    • Florida Registered Architect
    • Licensed Electrical Contractor (State of Florida or Miami-Dade County) with substantial field and supervisory experience.
    • Licensed Plans Examiner and Standard Inspector (State of Florida or Miami-Dade County).
  • Prior professional experience within Miami-Dade County jurisdiction or comparable authority is preferred.
  • Extensive familiarity with local inspection and enforcement processes specific to Miami-Dade and South Florida is preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills in regulatory or government settings.
  • Experience with digital permitting or inspection platforms.
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Must pass a background screening process.

Equivalency Clause:
  • An equivalent combination of High School Diploma, training, and at least 10 years of experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered in lieu of the stated education and experience requirements. Substitution will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine relevance and comparability.

Work Authorisation/Security Clearance:
  • The employee must successfully pass a background screening process and comply with the City’s Drug-Free Workplace policy.
  • The City will also verify the identity and employment authorisation of individuals hired so the proper completion of Form I-9 is required, which includes the employee providing documents evidencing identity and employment authorisation.
