General Function:
The Building Inspector is responsible for managing and directing the building inspection operations within the jurisdiction to ensure compliance with the Florida Building Code, local amendments, and all applicable regulations. This leadership role oversees inspections related to structural, life safety, and general building systems.
The Building Inspector provides technical guidance to inspection staff, interprets code provisions, and ensures consistent and accurate enforcement of building regulations. As a key figure in the permitting and construction compliance process, this position represents the authority having jurisdiction in matters related to building inspections, structural integrity, and code interpretation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan, supervise, and coordinate the daily operations of the building inspection division.
- Review and approve inspection reports, field findings, and staff recommendations to ensure compliance with applicable building codes and safety standards.
- Interpret the Florida Building Code, Miami-Dade County Code Chapter 8, and other relevant laws and regulations, providing expert guidance to inspectors, contractors, engineers, architects, and the public.
- Conduct or oversee inspections of complex, high-risk, or sensitive construction projects for compliance with structural and safety codes.
- Monitor code changes, new construction techniques, and materials to ensure up-to-date enforcement practices.
- Provide training, mentoring, and performance evaluations for inspection staff, ensuring all certifications and continuing education requirements are met.
- Work closely with Plans Examiners, Building Officials, and other departments to facilitate efficient permit and inspection processes.
- Participate in enforcement actions, hearings, and appeals as the subject matter expert on building code compliance.
- Maintain accurate inspection records and documentation in accordance with departmental and legal requirements.
- Ensure compliance with all certification, continuing education, and re-certification mandates as required by the State of Florida and the Miami-Dade County Board of Rules and Appeals (BORA).
- Represent the jurisdiction at professional meetings, regulatory forums, and community outreach events as needed.
- Perform related duties as assigned.

Type of Appointment/Work hours:
- Full-time/Regular in-person position.
- Standard workweek, which is forty (40) hours of work per week usually consisting of five (5) days of eight (8) hours per day. The workday may be varied for the efficient delivery of public service.
- Will be required to work other than the standard workweek on occasion, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
- Will be required to work occasional overtime or shift assignments, if applicable.
- Designated as essential personnel.
Requirements:
- Must meet the County Code’s requirements for appointment as Chief Building Inspector under Miami-Dade County Code Sec. 8-21.2 or local equivalent.
- Must be certified or eligible for certification by the Miami-Dade County Board of Rules and Appeals (BORA) as a Chief Building Inspector in the building/structural discipline.
- Must hold or obtain appropriate State of Florida certification through the Building Code Administrators & Inspectors Board (BCAIB).
- Must have demonstrated experience, typically five (5) or more years, in supervisory or administrative roles involving building inspections, code enforcement, construction oversight in the structural/building field, and In-depth knowledge of Florida Building Code (FBC), Miami-Dade County Code Chapter 8, local building code amendments, and construction standards.
- Must hold and maintain a valid driver’s license and be able to travel to job sites and inspections as needed.
- Must be able to complete required continuing education and maintain all relevant certifications.

Must possess one or more of the following, or an equivalent credential as permitted by BORA or local regulations):
- Florida Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) with relevant experience in building or structural systems.
- Florida Registered Architect (R.A.).
- Licensed General Contractor with the State of Florida or Miami-Dade County, with substantial construction experience.
- Licensed Plans Examiner and Standard Inspector – State of Florida or Miami-Dade County.
- Prior experience working within the Miami-Dade County jurisdiction, including familiarity with local codes and permitting processes is preferred.
- Previous experience serving as a Building Official, Senior Plans Examiner, or Senior Inspector is preferred.
- Speciality certifications or endorsements in Structural Inspection, Roofing Systems, High-Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ), or other hazard-specific building codes is preferred
- Proficiency with inspection and permitting software systems used by local governments.
- Must possess a valid Florida driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Must pass a background screening process.
Equivalency Clause:
- An equivalent combination of High School Diploma, training, and at least 10 years of experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered in lieu of the stated education and experience requirements. Substitution will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine relevance and comparability.

Work Authorisation/Security Clearance:
