What are the responsibilities and job description for the Planning Intern - Development/Zoning (UNPAID) position at City of Hollywood, Florida?
This internship with the City of Hollywood presents a unique opportunity for students to engage with key stakeholders in the Development Services Department, working under the guidance of the Planning Manager to perform essential development and zoning functions in a municipal government setting. The internship allows the intern(s) to experience real-world applications of urban planning for one of the largest cities in South Florida.
The Planning and Urban Design Division oversees the encompassing planning process for a built environment in a growing and changing urban landscape, the cultural melting pot of South Florida. This Division has programs and applications for development, permitting, zoning, historical and long-range planning, urban design and public art, GIS and growth management and excellent customer service. This position will primarily serve the Development program as we roll out a new entitlement process.
The intern(s) will be responsible for:
· Reporting directly to the Chief Planner, Planning Manager, and Principal Planner(s)
· Preliminary review of Certificates of Use, including direct communication with applicants
· Drafting simple and detailed Zoning Verification Letters
· Drafting Administrative Design Change Approval Letters
· Assisting clients and residents at the Development Services Hub front desk
(Answering Planning and Zoning questions, Simple permit/violation inquiries, Scheduling appointments with Planning staff)
· Shadowing planners at weekly meetings and assist on ongoing projects
· Attend Development Review Committee Meetings
· Clerical work including compiling relevant documents, reviewing submission packages for completeness, creating presentations, emailing meeting notices, and other office tasks
The intern(s) will be receiving training, knowledge, and experience in:
· Municipal-level government workings
· Urban planning, urban social, engineering, and transportation applications of GIS
· Direct communication with clients and residents
· Certificates of Use and Zoning Letter processes
· Planning project creation and maintenance
· Database management
· First-hand accounts of local government processes, meetings, and interactions as they pertain to the development process
This internship is ideal for students who seek to expand their skillset within Planning, Urban Design, and Development from the local government lens under the guidance of a seasoned Planning Manager and team with public/private experience. This internship is strictly in-person with a dedicated work area in-office and building access. The internship is unpaid. We have no control over pay or remote work for this position.
