GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Responsible supervisory position under the general supervision of the Deputy Public Works Director, managing mechanics, equipment repair technicians and all activities associated with the City's fleet maintenance division. Supports, leads and trains staff through hands-on leadership and supervision of vehicle/equipment diagnostics, maintenance and repair. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: - Supervises and coordinates daily work activities for the mechanical repair and maintenance of standard and specialized vehicles and equipment. - Assigns work to mechanics, assists mechanics, ensures work is completed, and reviews records of maintenance performed on various pieces of equipment. - Conducts performance evaluations and disciplinary actions of personnel in the Fleet Maintenance Division. - Reviews and approves leave requests to ensure adequate staffing. - Participates in the repair and/or overhaul of light and heavy trucks, gasoline or diesel motors. - Inspects shop equipment and schedules needed repairs or service work. - Provides technical assistance in unusual work problems encountered at the garage or other localities throughout the City. - Establishes and maintains vehicle operating and maintenance cost records, and evaluates information for purpose of vehicle disposal and replacement. - Responsible for inputting data utilizing computer-based data/inventory management and other sub-systems. Maintains and updates work orders, enters data, completes reports, adjusts inventory, researches repairs and orders parts utilizing a computer. - Ensures that the garage is maintained in a neat, orderly and safe manner. Ensures that tools are returned to appropriate locations and all safety rules/procedures are adhered too. - Assists in the preparation and control of the division budget. - Orders parts for repair and ensures adequate inventory levels for standard parts and shop supplies in compliance with the City's purchasing procedures. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: - Knowledge of the modern methods of maintaining and repairing automotive, road construction and other specialized heavy equipment. - Knowledge of the operating principles and maintenance of gasoline and diesel-powered engines. - Knowledge of modern methods of preventative maintenance. - Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions. - Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to subordinates in order that they will be able to accomplish assigned tasks. - Knowledge of the mechanics, uses, limitation and maintenance of Public Works and municipal vehicular equipment, specifically including heavy duty trucks and road construction equipment. - Ability to plan, assign, inspect, evaluate and supervise the work of skilled and semi-skilled employees engaging in servicing, repairing and maintaining automotive equipment and maintaining records and inventories. - Ability to establish and maintain vehicle operating and maintenance cost records and to analyze this information for the purpose of recommending equipment disposal and replacement. - Ability to develop procedures for the most economical operation of repair work and for the most efficient and economical operation and use of equipment. - Ability to train and supervise subordinates. - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors and other employees. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: - High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma supplemented by vocational training in automotive mechanics, preferably in heavy equipment. Associates degree preferred; four (4) years of related equipment operation and repair and maintenance experience. - Considerable progressively responsible experience in a large-scale program of automotive equipment maintenance and repair with experience in a responsible supervisory capacity either in the private or public sector. - Minimum of three (3) years supervisory experience in operation and maintenance of a fleet maintenance facility. (A comparable amount of training, education or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.) Salary : $60,000 - $85,000
