What are the responsibilities and job description for the TECHNICAL SERVICES LIBRARIAN position at City of Hobbs?
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Responsible for the overall direction and coordination of activities within the Technical Services area of the library.
- Responsible for ordering library materials, including large print books and audiobooks.
- Receives all new library books, audiobooks and DVDs to be added to the collection. Assigns call numbers, subject headings and barcodes to all library materials, to ensure that each item’s placement in the collection is accurate, logical and easy for library patrons to locate.
- Downloads bibliographic records from OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) and adds local holdings information to each record in the ELIN (Estacado Library Information Network) database.
- Ensures all received material is accounted for and that no damage has occurred during shipment.
- Schedules any returns or credits with vendors as necessary.
- Works closely with Reference Librarian, Children’s Librarian, Teen Librarian and Library Director to keep collection current by withdrawing obsolete materials from the database.
- May serve as a member of the ELIN cataloguer group and works closely with cataloguers from the other ELIN libraries to develop procedures to ensure that the ELIN database is accurate and up-to-date.
- Assists other ELIN cataloguers with any difficulties they may encounter with the automated SIRSI integrated library system.
- Manages the memorial book program, which includes receiving memorial donations, ordering appropriate books, sending acknowledgments, and keeping records of all donations and purchases.
- Manages meeting room reservations and scheduling.
- Acts as departmental timekeeper.
- Reviews departmental time for approval, ensuring corrections are properly made and ready for submission to the Finance Dept. Runs reports.
- Purchases office supplies, equipment, and materials for the library.
- Works cooperatively with library personnel regarding their book orders, book budget allocations, book repairs, and material processing.
- Performs a variety of routine and complex clerical work in processing, classifying and cataloguing library materials and providing service to library patrons.
- Acts as back-up to Library Specialist for entering Purchase Orders.
- Also acts as back-up for running library errands.
- Assists in other areas of the library as needed.

This position is subject to the City of Hobbs’ Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes one or more of the following: pre-employment testing, post accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing and follow-up testing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Requires a minimum of associate’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Two years of experience in a library or similar setting preferred.
Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted in lieu of stated education and experience requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks and duties.

- Ability to handle memorial requests from the public with sensitivity and accuracy.
- Ability to maintain high productivity in spite of numerous interruptions.
- Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
- Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with City library personnel, other City departments, ELIN cataloguers and various book vendors.
- Knowledge and understanding of cataloguing, the Dewey Decimal System, subject headings, and library practices, procedures and techniques.
- Knowledge of ELIN (Estacado Library Information Network) and OCLC (online Computer Library Center) systems.
- Knowledge and understanding of bibliographic control, MARC formats, and collection development
LICENSING AND CERTIFICATIONS
Valid state-issued Driver’s License
