What are the responsibilities and job description for the MEDIUM-HEAVY DUTY DIESEL TECHNICIAN position at City of Hobbs?
Determines vehicle condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests; identifying worn and damaged parts. Keeps equipment available for use by completing preventive maintenance schedules.
May serve on various employee committees, as required and assigned.
- Keeps equipment available for use by completing preventive maintenance schedules; installing components and part upgrades; controlling corrosion; completing winterization procedures.
- Corrects vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as, power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emissions, brake, steering, hydraulics; completes machine shop operations; making adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and traction units.
- Verifies vehicle performance by conducting test drives; adjusting controls and systems.
- Complies with federal, state and city vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards.
- Maintains vehicle appearance by cleaning, washing and painting.
- Maintains vehicle records by annotating service and repairs.
- Keeps shop and equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
- Contains costs by using warranty; evaluating service and parts options.
- Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
- Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical and regulation publications.
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment.

This position is subject to the City of Hobbs’ and the Federal Transportation Authorities Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes one or more of the following: pre-employment testing, post accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing and follow-up testing.
Education:
- High school graduate or GED equivalent required.
- Graduate of Diesel Technician program.
- May substitute Diesel Technician Program education with specialized training from Diesel/Heavy Equipment manufacture plus 2 years' experience.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Knowledge of construction, disassembly, assembly, adjustment and maintenance of a wide variety of truck, maintenance and construction equipment.
- Knowledge of gas and diesel engines, drive train, brakes, suspension and steering, electrical/electrical equipment, HVAC systems, preventive maintenance, inspections, etc.
- Knowledge of computers, systems, and programs used in diesel service and repair.
- Basic knowledge of hydraulic circuitry, cylinders and motors.
- Ability to perform and carry out an on-call schedule.
- Ability to operate a variety of hand, power and pneumatic tools to repair light to heavy-duty equipment. Ability to operate a hydraulic press and drill press.
- Ability to perform welding and metalworking projects on equipment.
- Ability to read and comprehend schematics.
- Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
- Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all City department personnel and general public.
LICENSING AND CERTIFICATIONS:
- Possess a valid New Mexico State issued driver's license with CDL Class A endorsement or ability to obtain within 18 months of hire.
- Must possess and maintain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in Medium-Heavy truck certification, or currently certified through a reputable distributorship (i.e. Cummins, CAT, etc.) or ability to obtain an ASE certification within 18 months of hire. Certification must be kept current.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
