I.T. COMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIAN

Responsible for installing, programming, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing the City of Hobbs’ radio communications systems and related equipment. Performs preventative maintenance, radio testing, vehicle and facility installations, and maintains equipment records and inventories. Assists with P25 systems, microwave equipment, the City’s FM radio station, FCC inspections, audio/visual systems, and after-hours emergency service calls.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Primarily responsible for the installation, programming, repair, and maintenance of all City of Hobbs radio communications equipment.
• Assiss in the installation and maintenance of the P25 trunked radio equipment, conventional radio systems, repeaters, dispatch consoles, antennas, and related communications equipment.
• Programs Kenwood and Harris subscriber radios under established system standards.
• Performs preventative maintenance and repairs on communications equipment.
• Troubleshoots radio system failures and performs field repairs.
• Installs and repairs microwave radio equipment, antennas, feedlines, and related infrastructure.
• Assists with maintenance of the City’s FM radio station – KHBX 90.7.
• Performs equipment installations in City vehicles and facilities as needed.  
• Conducts radio performance testing using electronic test equipment.
• Maintains repair records, maintenance logs, and equipment inventories.
• Responds to emergency service calls after normal business hours when required.
• Assists with FCC inspections and system testing.
• Assists with installation and maintenance of audio/visual equipment supporting City meetings.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• May serve on various employee committees, as required and assigned.

Education and Experience:

• Graduation from an accredited two (2) year college with a degree in Electronics Technology, Telecommunications, Computer Science or a closely related field focused on electronics or electrical technology;
   OR
• Completion of Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) related to radio communications, electronics, telecommunications, signal operations, or a closely related field;
   OR
• Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience installing, programming, maintaining, or repairing land mobile radio (LMR), public safety communications, telecommunications, or other electronic communications systems;
   OR
• Any equivalent combination of related education, military training, technical certifications, and experience.
• Experience with public safety radio systems preferred.

• Knowledge of radio communications equipment
• Knowledge of P25 trunked radio systems.
• Knowledge of Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations pertaining to applicable communications systems. 
• Knowledge of electronic test equipment and other specialized devices used in the repair, installation and maintenance of communications systems.
• Knowledge of microwave systems and radio programming software.
• Knowledge of current technical aspects of communications field.
• Knowledge of audio/visual equipment and software.
• Ability to install, maintain, and repair a variety of communications and related equipment.
• Ability to learn computer information systems.
• Ability to work at heights greater than 10 feet, from antenna towers, platforms, or trucks when needed.
• Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule. 
• Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.  
• Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City personnel, outside technical support agencies, vendors, and general public.

LICENSING AND CERTIFICATIONS

• Valid state issued driver’s license.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general guidance and direction of the Communications Specialist, Assistant I.T. Director, and the I.T. Director.
