About Parks & Recreation – Shute Park Aquatic & Recreation Center

The City of Hillsboro’s Parks & Recreation team creates opportunities for community members to connect, stay active, and build relationships through inclusive programs and services. Our aquatic facilities provide safe, engaging experiences for swimmers of all ages, and our team members help ensure every visitor has a positive experience.

What You’ll Be Doing:

• Monitor pool areas and activities to maintain a safe environment for swimmers of all ages.
• Enforce facility rules and policies while providing friendly and respectful experience for participants.
• Assist swimmers who need support, including performing emergency rescues when necessary.
• Respond to emergencies by providing first aid, CPR, and other appropriate assistance.
• Work collaboratively with other lifeguards to maintain coverage and safety throughout the facility.
• Complete routine facility maintenance tasks, including cleaning pool areas, locker rooms, restrooms, and shared spaces.
• Answer questions, provide information, and serve as a welcoming point of contact for community members.
• Communicate safety concerns, operational issues, and improvement ideas with supervisors.
• Participate in required training, meetings, and professional development activities.

What You’ll Need to Succeed

The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys working with people, stays calm under pressure, and takes pride in creating a safe and positive environment.

• Strong swimming skills and confidence working in an aquatic environment.
• Ability to respond quickly and appropriately during emergency situations.
• Commitment to safety, professionalism, and following established procedures.
• Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with people of diverse backgrounds and experiences.
• Strong customer service skills and a welcoming, positive attitude.
• Ability to work independently while also collaborating with a team.
• Dependable attendance and the ability to work scheduled shifts consistently.

Work Environment & Schedule

• Work is performed primarily in a pool facility environment.
• Position requires regular interaction with program participants, City employees, and members of the public.
• Must be available to work scheduled shifts based on operational needs.

Bilingual Incentive Pay Available

Employees who can demonstrate the ability to speak Spanish, ASL, or any other language spoken by over 10% of the City residents as documented by the most recent U.S. Census, will receive a monthly 3% premium pay. The incentive is only paid on hours in paid status. Proficiency will be determined by a City-administered test.
