What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seasonal Ravinia Bus Operator position at City of Highland Park?

Primary Purpose: Operates a transit bus to provide passengers with safe, courteous, and efficient transportation service during seasonal events. Ensures passenger safety, performs inspections, and completes required documentation in accordance with City and transit agency policies.

Supervision Received: Works under the direct supervision of the Transit Coordinator and Ravinia Foreman.

Operate assigned transit vehicle safely and courteously. Employ defensive driving techniques, make announcements, assist passengers with questions, and adapt to changing traffic or operational conditions. Maintain professional demeanor under pressure.

Complete required documentation and reports including trip sheets, maintenance logs, accident reports, and safety checklists.

Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections, including internal and external checks and operational testing of safety equipment. Collect and turn in any lost items after shift.

Required Minimum Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Education: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent is required. Strong written and oral communication skills and basic math proficiency are essential.

Experience: A minimum of two years of experience operating buses or working in transit systems is required. Ability to interact with the public in a professional and courteous manner is essential.

Certification or License:

Valid Illinois Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B
Passenger endorsement and air brake qualification
Five-year safe driving history documented through an Illinois DMV court purposes abstract or equivalent
Must meet and maintain all DOT physical requirements, including drug and alcohol screening
Employment is contingent upon PACE approval to operate transit vehicles

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Proficiencies:

Operate a transit bus safely using defensive driving techniques
Adhere to scheduled routes and timelines while adapting to changing conditions
Use mobile radio for communication and coordination with dispatch
Complete required documentation and reports accurately
Operate the wheelchair ramp and secure passengers according to safety procedures
Maintain vehicle cleanliness and respond professionally to detours, accidents, or emergencies
