What are the responsibilities and job description for the Recycling Worker (Part-Time) position at City of Highland Park?
Primary Purpose:
Primary responsibilities will be to collect, transport, and pack electronic recycling materials, foam products and other miscellaneous materials for recycling.
Supervision Received:
This position works under the direct supervision of Assistant to the Director of Public Works.
This is a part-time position with work hours every Tuesday 6:30 AM to 1:00 PM and the first Saturday of every month, from 6:30 AM to 1:00 PM.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collects materials for recycling from participants. Separates and packs items appropriately for transport to recycling facility; includes packing electronics in boxes, foam materials in collection bags, fluorescent bulbs in boxes, etc. Prepares and wraps items on pallet for transport.
- Professionally acknowledge and greet residents in daily interactions. Request and log information regarding resident's municipality and types of materials dropped off. May also be required to conduct various resident surveys and provide information and feedback to administrators.
- Maintains and clears debris from the recycling facility to ensure the area is kept clean and safe.
- Performs other related duties as requested.

Education:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
Experience:
Provide proof of satisfactory past work-related experience in Public Works or related field; the ability to complete physical and skilled manual labor duties.
Certification or License:
A valid driver's license is preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Proficiencies:
Practices and procedures for safe lifting techniques and proper handling of various types of materials. Ability to communicate orally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperative and professional working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Safety Functions:
- Becomes familiar with and observes all applicable safety policies and procedures.
- Immediately reports all unsafe conditions.
- Keeps work area clean, orderly, and free of hazards.
- Adheres to all safety rules and established work procedures.
- Maintains appropriate physical fitness to perform essential job functions.
The work environment is performed in the outside and seasonal temperatures and weather conditions may vary from extremely hot, humid and dusty to extremely cold and wet. Low to moderate noise levels typical.
Normal work day operations are typically every Tuesday and one Saturday per month from 6:30 AM to 1:00 PM. Additional work outside of these hours is not expected.

The position requires the knowledge, skill and ability to practice safe lifting techniques in the handling of large electronic items, using appropriate safety gear and lifting aids; knowledge and skill in the occasional use of a skidsteer and fork lift, or other equipment to load a trailer.
