As a Laboratory Analyst Intern, you’ll get hands-on training in an accredited laboratory, working alongside experienced analysts to test and analyze water, wastewater, stormwater, and industrial wastewater samples. This internship will provide you with valuable skills in laboratory procedures, data analysis, and fieldwork. Your responsibilities will include:
•Hands-On Lab Work: Conduct chemical, physical, biological, and bacteriological tests on water samples to ensure safety and environmental compliance.
•Field Sampling & Investigations: Collect water and wastewater samples from various locations in High Point and conduct on-site testing using field meters.
•Industrial Compliance Testing: Set up automatic samplers, collect wastewater compliance samples, and investigate spills.
•Data & Reporting: Compile test results, maintain records, and assist in preparing reports used for regulatory compliance.
•Community Impact: Analyze samples in response to water quality concerns from residents and communicate findings to ensure public safety.
•Currently pursuing a degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or a related field.
•Ability to work a morning shift (starting your day by 8:00 AM)
•A valid Driver’s License (for fieldwork purposes).
•Passion for environmental science and a strong attention to detail.
•Previous experience in a laboratory or environmental setting is a plus but not required!
PHYSICAL & MENTAL REQUIRMENTS
As a lab intern, you’ll be involved in both fieldwork and lab tasks. Here’s what you’ll need to be comfortable with to succeed and stay safe on the job:
Communication
•Hearing & Speaking: You’ll need to clearly communicate with your team and occasionally respond to public questions about water quality.
Vision Requirements
•Distance Vision: Needed for safely collecting samples and surveying work sites (corrected vision around 20/25).
•Close-up Vision: Important for reading protocols and performing detailed lab procedures (corrected vision around 20/22).
•Depth Perception: Helps when switching between tools or tasks that are at different distances.
•Field of Vision: A wide visual range is important to stay aware of your surroundings, especially when working near chemicals.
•Focus Adjustment (Accommodation): You’ll frequently switch focus between close tasks and checking your surroundings.
•Color Vision: Necessary for detecting changes in water samples and identifying accurate titration results.
Physical Activity & Strength
•Strength: This role involves light physical work:
o Lifting up to 50 lbs occasionally.
o Lifting up to 10 lbs more frequently.
o Using minimal effort regularly to move or handle materials.
•Common Movements:
o Reaching (mostly forward or to the side),
o Handling (grasping, turning, holding items),
o Precision Work with Fingers: Using fine motor skills for tasks that require accuracy, like measuring, adjusting instruments, or working with small lab tools.
Mental Skills
•Reasoning: You’ll need to apply logical thinking to lab work and safety protocols. Sound judgment is especially important when working with chemicals.
•Math Skills: Basic arithmetic is used for chemical calculations, unit conversions, and data recording.
•Reading & Communication: You should be able to read technical documents, follow instructions, and clearly communicate with coworkers and the public when needed.
Work Environment
•Indoor & Outdoor Work: Expect to split your time between the lab and field sites for sample collection.
•Chemical Exposure: You’ll work with a range of water treatment chemicals. Safety standards, including OSHA guidelines, are followed closely.
Tools & Equipment
•Computers, calculators, printers/copiers.
•Lab instruments: pH meters, balances, incubators, spectrophotometers, etc.
•Field gear: sample collectors, manhole tools, meters.
•Manuals, safety guides, and technical reference materials.
