What are the responsibilities and job description for the Parking Enforcement Officer position at City of Hickory?
This position is responsible for the enforcement of local and state laws and ordinances pertaining to traffic direction and parking enforcement.
- Patrols business and residential areas to detect and deter parking violations; issues parking tickets.
- Assists with traffic control upon request by patrol units at traffic accidents.
- Provides traffic direction and control at special events such as parades, funerals, and ball games.
- Testifies in judicial proceedings as necessary.
- Maintains and inspects assigned patrol vehicle.
- Completes all required reports and forms and parking tickets and citations; mails letters to those receiving parking tickets and civil citations.
- Receives monies paid for parking tickets and civil citations.
- Issues construction parking permits
- Assists the general public with directions and other related matters.
- Attends ongoing training classes as required.
- Performs courier duties for the department.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of relevant state laws, traffic codes, city ordinances, and departmental policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of the geography and streets of the city.
- Knowledge of the court system and judicial procedures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed with the employee sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee must occasionally lift light or heavy objects, use equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color.
SAFETY SENSITIVE: This position has been identified as safety sensitive. The employee in this position will be part of a random drug testing pool. The methodology for choosing the random test subjects is handled by an outside, impartial, third-party vendor.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed indoors, in a vehicle, and outdoors. The employee may be exposed to inclement weather.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Sergeant assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include state and federal laws, traffic laws, city ordinances, and departmental policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related technical law enforcement duties. The necessity of dealing with the public contributes to the complexity of the work.
