Job Purpose:
Performs a variety of skilled manual labor tasks assisting other Traffic Control Technicians using common hand and power tools. An Incumbent in this class performs a variety of skilled manual labor tasks, associated with installing and maintaining traffic control signs, and devices. Participates in traffic studies, and operates light equipment as assigned.
Essential Duties: These job functions are the essential duties of the position and are not all-inclusive of all the duties the incumbent may be assigned.
Duty I: Pavement Markings
55% Time

Tasks :
- Installation & repair of thermoplastic pavement markings.
- Painted pavement markings using manually propelled pavement machine & reflective glass beads. Grinding out markings no longer needed using scarifier.
Duty 2: Sign Work
15% Time

Tasks :
- Fabrication and assembly of street signs.
- Installation of signs. Assist with installation of traffic control devices such as: traffic counting equipment & hoses.
Duty 3: Street Maintenance and Repair
15% Time

Tasks :
- Pothole repair consisting of asphalt being poured into the holes and compacted with a hand
tamper, car tire, or something that provides an even, level surface such as a roller. Use hand
tools associated with asphalt placement (shovel, asphalt rake).
May be required to act as flag person (flagger) when needed.
Duty 4: Special Events & Other Traffic Control
15% Time
Secondary Duties
Tasks :
- Set up before and tear down traffic control following special events.
- Calmly answer questions and direct traffic following traffic control plan. Assist loading and unloading equipment loaned by division.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Related to this Position:
Knowledge of:
- Use of common hand and power tools.
- Use of manually propelled paint machines, air compressors, jack hammer, scarifier and propane torch.
- Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks on schedule and in adverse weather.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with employees, the public, and other agencies.
- Ability to remain calm and professional when dealing with stressful traffic situations.
Physical Demands:
- Variety of physical activities including climbing, crawling, stooping and lifting/loading minimum 80-100 pounds.
Performs all functions in the safest possible manner and according to policies and procedures. Participates fully with safety trainings. Reports unsafe work conditions and practices, work-related injuries, illnesses, and near-misses as soon as possible to assigned supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience and Training):
This position requires a minimum of high school graduation or the equivalent. Other relevant combinations of education and work experience may be evaluated on an individual basis.
License or Certificate:
Must possess a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record at the time of hire and have the ability to obtain a valid MT driver’s license within six months of hire. Flagger training certification, provided by Traffic Tech Coordinator.
Supervision Received:
Direction will be provided by Streets Supervisor or assigned Traffic Tech 1.
