Job Purpose:
Provide a secure environment for Judges, employees of the clerk’s office, city officials, victim advocates, and the general public during court proceedings.
Essential Duties: These job functions are the essential duties of the position and are not all-inclusive of all the duties the incumbent may be assigned.
Duty I: COURTROOM SECURITY
65% Time

Tasks:
? Be present in courtroom for any trials or court proceedings as requested by the judge. ? Enforce the law and court rules of behavior within the court as directed by the judge. ? Monitor the court for general safety issues and notify judge of any problems. ? Coordinates and transports persons to and from court and jail as ordered by judge. ? Responsible to supervise any prisoners in the court. ? Assist the court in locating necessary documentation from the police department. ? Write, review, and serve citations and warrants as directed by the prosecutor’s office, and city agencies. ? Review paperwork, research cases, acts as liaison to regulating agencies and the general public.
? Maintain a safe environment in the Helena Municipal Court and offices.
Duty 2: COURTROOM PROCEDURES
25% Time

? Prepares for initial court appearances.
? Secure any unauthorized weapons that are brought into court.
? Supervise jurors and guard the jury when they are sequestered. Guard duty will include being the point of contact for the jury while it is sequestered and any escort of the jury outside the court, if required.
? Make minor corrections on citations and other court documents as needed and when appropriate to do so.
? Administer a PBT for alcohol as directed by the judge.
? Reviews parking citations disputed by citizens to resolve the issue or assist with setting a hearing in Municipal Court for the subject.
? Ensure that all individuals comply with the direction of the judge with respect to their individual conduct and behavior.
? Take immediate action to respond to any violent or potentially disruptive situation that might threaten public safety.
Duty III: ADDITIONAL COURT DUTIES

Ability to perform all the duties of a Police Officer and assigned tasks.
Ability to work in a standard office environment and outdoors with ability to sit, stand, see, hear, lift up to 50 lbs., and walk.
Work Environment: Physical and mental ability to successfully make arrests, when necessary and as mandated by Montana Codes Annotated and Helena City Codes; physical strength and ability to engage in foot pursuit, physically restrain humans, and agility to sufficiently perform duties safely.
Safety:
Performs all functions in the safest possible manner and according to policies and procedures. Participates fully with safety trainings. Reports unsafe work conditions and practices, work-related injuries, illnesses, and near-misses as soon as possible to the assigned supervisor.
Participate fully in safety training. Suggest improvements in safety training requirements or programs to the supervisor or the safety committee. Identify unsafe work conditions and unsafe practices. Correct hazards or report them to the supervisor or safety committee as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience and Training):
This position requires a minimum of: High school diploma or equivalent; per Montana State Code must be a resident of the state continuously for a minimum of one (1) year and must be a resident of Lewis and Clark County for a minimum of six (6) months prior to applying.
Must be able to successfully complete the Montana Police Officers Agility Test (MPAT); a psychological exam, and a full background.
Must meet all additional requirement standards for becoming a Reserve Officer as outline in §7-32-313 (MCA).
License or Certificate:
Must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record at the time of hire and have the ability to obtain a valid MT driver’s license within six months of hire.
Supervision Received:
Directly Supervised by the Desk Sergeant and under the SSD Lieutenant.
Supervision Exercised:
None.
