General Nature of Work:

This is skilled and semi-skilled work in the Water/Wastewater Department. A worker in this class is responsible for reading meters. Duties are performed under the direct supervision of the immediate department supervisor. General operation of the City of Harrison’s Water Plant.

Equipment and Job Location:

Work sites include a variety of areas throughout the City of Harrison and Harrison Township. Equipment used includes a hand-held computer and a meter testing board. Orion meter reading system/laptop/laboratory equipment.

Essential Functions – Examples of Duties:

  • Operate all necessary water treatment equipment, and maintenance.
  • Reads water meters in both residential and commercial establishments, enters in hand-held computer.
  • Water tap inspections.
  • Checks meters for damages, makes small repairs if possible.
  • Change out meters.
  • Tests meters for accuracy and adjusts when necessary.
  • Collects and records various water data at the water plant and monitor chemicals.

Additional Examples of Work Performed:

  • Responds to complaints from citizens.
  • Shut off water for non payments and repairs at any time.
  • Performs related duties as directed.

Employees may be required to work outside of his or her job description on a temporary basis during emergency circumstances.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with city officials, supervisory personnel, fellow employees, other city employees, and the general public.
  • Ability to read street maps and perform mathematical calculations and possess computer skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions.
  • Some knowledge of the operation, care, and maintenance of meters and related equipment.
  • Some knowledge of water sample collection and analysis.
  • Ability to work under the direct supervision of the immediate departmental/division supervisor.

Desirable Training and Experience:

Graduation from a standard high school or the equivalence, supplemented by some experience in wastewater treatment operations; or any combination of training and experience which provides the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Necessary Special Requirements:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain promptly, a valid State of Ohio Driver’s License
  • Ability to be called out on other than normal working hours, and work various shifts as necessary, including regularly scheduled weekend and holiday hours.

Please note: Candidate must be willing to obtain Operator Class I within 6 months or within a reasonable date of hire.
