What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Works/Steam Plant - Plant Mechanic II position at City of Hampton?
The purpose of the class is to perform planned maintenance on equipment, including motors, lighting, such as cranes, conveyors, grounds maintenance, gearboxes, and bearings. The class works under general supervision, according to set procedures, but determines how or when to complete tasks.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Two (2) years of full-time equivalent experience with pneumatic process control systems and overhead cranes, power plant preventive maintenance, electrical repairs, complex mechanical repairs, and repairs to emission monitors, leading maintenance teams, and providing mechanic training or a closely related experience.
- Completion of technical trade school curriculum in one or more of the following skill areas is preferred: industrial electricity, machinist mechanic, boiler repair, electric welding, or crane repair.
- Must meet the City’s required medical standards as determined by a licensed physician.
- This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
- Must successfully pass a background check related to this position before any offer of employment or promotion.
Additional Requirements
- May require working beyond a standard 40-hour work week to include evenings and weekends.
- The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergencies or at the direction of the City Manager, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
