This role involves complex clerical, technical, and administrative duties related to accounting records and documents, with a strong emphasis on customer interaction to resolve tax issues.
What you will be doing:
- Performs responsible and confidential work in support of collection activities for tax payments. Processes a variety of tax payments such as income tax, personal property and real estate tax, ensuring timely posting and accounting. Reconciles actual tax collections with totals posted in the data system. Maintains records and/or ledgers for each collection and taxpayer.
- Develops and maintains a variety of manual and automated records and compiles reports from the records as needed. Provides regular reports to the controller. Prepares annual end of year reports and listings of delinquent personal property taxes as needed.
- Completes all correspondence related to tax payments received in the mail. Ensures that all records, correspondence, and print-outs are correct and up to date for use by state auditors.
- Interprets City Ordinances and Virginia State Code regarding policies and procedures on collecting and processing personal property and real estate taxes.
- Answers questions regarding real estate and personal property issues via telephone and/or face-to-face contact. Performs research to identify and resolve issues pertaining to tax payments.
- Works closely with the Hampton Department of Information Technology to improve processes in assigned function.
- Trains other personnel as necessary in this function.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Completion of a standard high school course of study or GED. Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's degree preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) years banking, law enforcement, collections and/or customer service experience required.
- Requires the ability to: work independently and meet deadlines; perform mathematical computations quickly and accurately; review processes and compare information in order to identify discrepancies; compile data and compare routine reports and studies; analyze and evaluate procedures and work methods and exercise appropriate judgment in establishing priorities and work methods; use peripheral computer equipment with reasonable speed and accuracy; read and understand written materials and instructions; establish and maintain effective work relationships to deal effectively and courteously with the public. Must possess effective oral and written communication skills.
- Requires a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record based on the city of Hampton's criteria.
- Individuals under consideration for position will be subject to a criminal background check.
- Any acceptable combination of experience and education may be considered.
- The incumbent must maintain confidentiality of all information. Work is performed in an office environment.
- Requires tact and diplomacy to resolve problems in stressful situations.
- May require working beyond a standard 40 hour work week during peak season.
- This is a non-exempt position.
