The family support worker position provides individualized parent education and support, utilizing the Healthy Families America home visitation model.
Typical Task
This position primarily involves providing support and early intervention services to families through home and virtual visits, utilizing the Parents As Teachers curriculum. Key responsibilities include building trust with culturally diverse families, supporting healthy child development, maintaining detailed records in the CASIE database (comprising about 40% of the workload), and coordinating access to healthcare and social services. The role also includes data entry, conducting screenings and assessments, participating in quality improvement initiatives, attending regular trainings and supervision, and offering transportation and referrals as needed to help families manage stress and build resilience.
Minimum Requirements
- Graduation from high school or successful completion of the GED.
- Bachelor’s Degree in related field preferred.
- Some experience in early childhood/preschool populations, working with families. Knowledge of infant and child development.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally, in writing, use of data entry; ability to interact effectively with others; ability to foster effective public relations and work with culturally diverse population. Acceptance of individual differences. Knowledge of community resources and child development. Teaching skills. Infant mental health endorsement preferred.
- A combination of education and experience may be considered for this position.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
- This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy.
- Must successfully pass a background check related to this position and child protective services check prior to an offer of employment or promotion.
- The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during city emergency situations, or at the direction of the City Manager or designee which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
