Function
Help keep Hampton Fire & Rescue running smoothly. In this pivotal HR operations role, you’ll support senior leadership with payroll, personnel actions, leave compliance, and workforce scheduling systems—so our crews can focus on serving the community.
Typical Task:
- Own Telestaff/Kronos setup, data integrity, and vendor liaison.
- Prepare and audit payroll data; submit to Finance for processing.
- Initiate and process personnel actions (pay changes, transfers, promotions, separations).
- Coordinate and track FMLA and extended leave (eligibility, notices, monitoring).
- Research and report on personnel, payroll, and leave/accrual topics.
- Ensure performance appraisals are accurate and complete.
- Maintain rosters (location, seniority/shift) and personnel files.
- Respond to employee inquiries on employment, pay, and policies; stay current via training.
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Human Resources, or a closely related field.
- A minimum of two (2) years of full-time equivalent experience in human resources, personnel, payroll, or a closely related field.
- A combination of education and experience may be considered for this position.
- Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
- Must successfully pass a background check related to the position before an offer of employment or promotion.
- Requires effective communication with internal and external customers.
- Requires working closely with other management members and in coordination with the Department of Human Resources.
- Requires working with a diverse group of customers in concurrent activities.
- Must provide fast, flexible, quality services to internal and external customers.
- Considerable contact with all levels of City officials, employees, the general public, and related outside organizations.
- Requires some travel to outlying City departments and within the local area.
- The incumbent will be considered “essential personnel” during City emergencies or at the direction of the City Manager, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
