Job Summary

Under immediate direction and in compliance with straightforward and standardized policies, procedures, and rules, performs basic automotive and equipment repairs and services (e.g., tire replacement/rotation, oil change, bulb replacement, etc.). Assists with assignments such as brakes and suspension repairs, minor adjustments, engine tune-ups, air conditioning services, and basic manufacturer maintenance services. Responds to basic field service calls as needed. Inputs all service information into the fleet work management system. Assists in the cleaning and organizing of the shop area as well as maintaining shop equipment. Assists with special projects and events and supports inclement weather operations. Subject to emergency service hours during inclement weather events.

  • Perform Basic Services and Repairs: Perform basic services and repairs such as replacing bulbs, tightening loose parts, all aspects of tire service (e.g., replacement, balance, rotation, etc.) on various fleet vehicles and heavy equipment. Perform multi-point inspections to identify and diagnose basic vehicle/equipment issues and escalate more complex maintenance and service issues as necessary. Perform manufacturer-specified preventative maintenance services A and B and annual inspection safety checks on automotive vehicles. Secure the necessary repair parts from the parts vendor in order to complete all basic services and repairs. Interpret job orders, follow work flow and document all completed tasks. Document all maintenance and repairs by completing a check sheet for each service provided. Input service and repair data into the fleet work management system. Assist other mechanics with repairs/replacements such as brakes and suspension, minor adjustments and body work, engine tune-ups, air conditioning services, and basic manufacturer maintenance services.

  • Provide On-call Field Service: Respond to field calls for equipment service. Survey location and equipment for safety assurance. Perform basic on-site diagnostic procedures to determine if vehicle/equipment can be repaired on site or needs to be towed to shop. Change and repair tires, replace batteries, and jump start equipment and vehicles in the field if needed.

  • Provide Facility and Resource Management: Salvage usable parts from equipment being removed from service. Properly dispose of and recycle used parts and equipment. Maintain shop inventory and supplies notifying parts staff of order needs within a timely manner. Stow equipment and supplies to be available for use as needed.

  • Clean and Maintain Shop Area: Maintain a clean and safe shop area. Assist co-workers in cleaning, organizing, sweeping, and mopping the shop area. Ensure shop floor, counters/surfaces are free of clutter, debris, and/or spills. Clean tools and shop equipment after use. Store tools and equipment in appropriate designated area.

Job Requirements for Mechanic I

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least six (6) months of prior automotive repair experience.
    • OR completion of a technical automotive or diesel technology training/certification program.
  • Completion of mechanic competency classification test at minimum of level I within six (6) months of hire.
  • FEMA ICS 100, 552, and 700, within three (3) months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications for Mechanic I

  • Over one (1) year of experience in automotive repair.
  • ASE certification. 

Job Requirements for Mechanic II
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Over two years of experience in automotive repair, tire service, and vehicle mechanics.
  • Completion of level II City Competency Classification test.
  • FEMA ICS 100, 552, and 700, within three (3) months of employment.

Job Requirements for Mechanic III

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Over four (4) years of experience in automotive repair, tire service, and vehicle mechanics.
  • Completion of level III City Competency Classification test.
  • FEMA ICS 100, 552, and 700, within three (3) months of employment.


Driver's License Requirements for Mechanic I

  • Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License.

Driver's License Requirements for Mechanic II and Mechanic III
  • Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License at hire.
  • Valid South Carolina Class A Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) within three (3) weeks of hire.
  • Valid South Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within three (3) months of hire.


Performance Requirements

Knowledge of:

  • OSHA and safe working practices and procedures.
  • Automotive vehicle and diesel equipment service requirement and preventative maintenance procedures.
  • Proper disposal of used parts and equipment.
  • Fleet work management system.

Ability to:

  • Perform multi-point vehicle/equipment inspections and identify service needs.
  • Perform tire rotations and service.
  • Respond to service calls and diagnose maintenance requirements in the field; prepare vehicles to be towed when necessary.
  • Remove, tear down, rebuild, adjust, reinstall, align, and mesh automotive components and assemblies.
  • Communicate effectively with users, service writers and other technicians.
  • Develop and maintain cooperative and professional relationships with employees and all levels of management to include representatives from other departments, external organizations, and the public.
  • Maintain excellent organization and attention to detail.
  • Read and comprehend service manuals, policies, etc.
  • Prepare maintenance reports and compose emails in a clear and professional manner.
  • Make mathematical calculations and draw logical conclusions; work with fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurements.
  • Use hand tools, diagnostic machine, calipers, micrometers, electrical and pneumatic power tools, a/c recovery machine, and various other equipment.
  • Operate general office equipment to include scanner, printer, copier, telephone, and computer with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Utilize specialized software and systems to include timekeeping system and fleet management information systems.

Working Conditions

Primary Work Location: Fleet Maintenance Shop.

Protective Equipment Required: Steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, ear plugs (as needed), and gloves.

Environmental/Health and Safety Factors:  

Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Occasional outside work. Daily exposure to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards. Constant exposure to mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, explosives, communicable diseases, and physical danger or abuse. Frequent exposure to fire hazards.

Physical Demands:  

Constantly requires standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, balancing, bending, hearing, twisting, and talking. Frequently requires kneeling, crawling, foot controls, and crouching and stooping. Occasionally requires sitting, and handling/grasping. Very Heavy strength demands include exerting over 100 pounds occasionally, exerting 50-100 pounds frequently, or exerting 20-50 pounds constantly.

Mental Demands:  

Frequently requires time pressures, frequent change of tasks, irregular schedule/overtime, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment. Occasionally requires emergency situations.
