This is a Service Critical Position and requires participation in an on-call rotation approximately 2–3 times per year for 8 days at a time.
The Engineering and Inspections Department is seeking skilled and motivated HVAC professionals to join our Building Maintenance Division as Maintenance Mechanic II – HVAC. This is a high-level HVAC position that works independently, requires minimal supervision, and plays a critical role in maintaining safe, efficient, and functional City facilities.
The ideal candidate will have strong troubleshooting abilities, hands-on HVAC maintenance and repair experience, and the ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment while supporting critical building operations throughout the City.

About the Role
This position performs advanced-level HVAC maintenance, repair, installation assistance, and troubleshooting work on commercial and residential HVAC systems throughout City facilities. The Maintenance Mechanic II – HVAC works independently and is responsible for diagnosing and repairing complex HVAC issues while ensuring compliance with all applicable industry and OSHA safety standards.
Primary duties include inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, and replacing defective HVAC equipment, electrical components, controls, and wiring. This position also tests electrical circuits and system components using diagnostic testing equipment, performs system inspections, and verifies equipment performance and compliance with specifications.
The employee in this role must possess the knowledge and ability to work on:
- Chillers
- Boilers
- Cooling towers
- Chilled water pumps
- Hot water pumps
- Heat pumps
- Split HVAC systems
- Packaged HVAC units
- Building automation control systems
This role also assists in training newer maintenance mechanics and may oversee work performed in the field. Employees are expected to maintain clean and safe work areas and provide excellent internal customer service while supporting departmental operations.
Physical duties include walking, standing, bending, kneeling, reaching, stooping, and lifting up to 25 pounds, along with other physical activities associated with HVAC maintenance and repair work.

What You Bring
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma/GED with 4 to 6 years of hands-on commercial or residential HVAC equipment experience (installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and/or repair)
OR - No High School Diploma/GED with 6 to 8 years of hands-on commercial or residential HVAC equipment experience (installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and/or repair)
OR - Associate’s Degree with 1 to 3 years of hands-on commercial or residential HVAC equipment experience (installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and/or repair)
- Valid Driver’s License
- Universal Chlorofluorocarbon (Freon) Recovery License “OR” the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire
- Experience with Microsoft Office software (i.e. Word, Outlook, Excel)
Preferred Qualifications
- State Plumbing & Heating Contractor’s License H1, H2, or H3
- Experience working in additional mechanical trades such as Plumbing, Electrical, and/or Carpentry
- Experience working with building automation systems such as Johnson Controls, Tracer Summit, Automated Logic, or Honeywell
- Experience using EAM or other work order management systems
- Experience with computer software, iPads, and general office equipment
