Job Summary:
The Senior Traffic Signal Technician manages the daily operations and maintenance of the Traffic Operation Center. This includes the Advanced Transportation Management System, Intelligent Transportation Systems, and coordination of signal systems to facilitate safe vehicular and pedestrian traffic. This role involves assisting with inspections and reviewing signal design plans. The position reports to the Traffic Operations Supervisor.

May involve extended shifts and irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs as part of an on-call rotation.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills:

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma
  • Six (6) years of relevant experience
  • IMSA Level II certification or ability to obtain within one year
  • IMSA Level I and II TOC certification or within two years
  • TIM Certification within six months
  • Traffic Control Supervisor certification or within one year
  • Class B CDL or within one year
  • Fiber splicing and network programming experience
  • Work rotating shifts, holidays, and weekends

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of electronics and IT infrastructure
  • IMSA Level III certification

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Read and interpret blueprints
  • Communicate effectively with coworkers and the public
  • Maintain effective working relationships
  • Comprehensive knowledge of fiber networks and traffic signal equipment
  • Knowledge of traffic control standards contained in the FHWA's Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices

Essential Functions:

  • Operate and maintain the ATMS and ITS
  • Troubleshoot and repair traffic signal and communication devices
  • Utilize traffic data for improvements
  • Program and adjust signal controllers
  • Conduct traffic analyses and support traffic calming initiatives
  • Collaborate on system maintenance
  • Manage right-of-way permits and traffic control plans
  • Support Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program
  • Participate in emergency response and on-call duties

Travel:
Occasional local travel within the County to meetings and trainings.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

Work Environment:

  • Work is performed primarily outdoors across a variety of municipal environments, including roadways, and construction sites, with occasional indoor tasks at maintenance shops.
  • Routinely exposed to all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, and ice.
  • Exposure to hazardous conditions such as working with heights, near hazardous locations, and/or energized electrical equipment.
  • The role involves proximity to and operation of heavy equipment such as bucket trucks, loaders, backhoes and snowplows with exposure to loud noise, vibrations, moving machinery, dust, fumes, road and organic debris. and potentially hazardous materials.
  • Duties include working in and around live traffic, construction zones, and in heights exceeding 15 feet, requiring the use of appropriate PPE and traffic control practices.
  • Work may involve navigating uneven terrain, confined spaces, and elevated surfaces, including manholes, culverts, embankments, at heights (such as on rooftops, bucket, ladders, or scaffolding).

Physical Requirements:

  • Mobility: Ability to walk, stand, or work on uneven terrain for extended periods. Frequently climb ladders, wear a harness and work from heights for long periods of time, steps, and equipment; enter and exit vehicles and equipment regularly.
  • Strength: Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull tools, materials, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds regularly, and up to 100 pounds occasionally, with or without assistance as needed.
  • Endurance: Ability to perform sustained physical labor in outdoor environments for extended periods (8–12 hours), including during inclement weather and emergency response.
  • Dexterity: Sufficient manual dexterity to operate tools, equipment, and vehicle controls with precision and safety. Ability to complete fine motor tasks.
  • Flexibility: Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach overhead and below waist level, and maintain awkward positions when performing work tasks.
  • Vision and Hearing: Adequate visual acuity to read instruments, inspect work areas and monitor traffic and jobsite conditions. Ability to monitor surroundings and equipment operation. Ability to hear warning signals, verbal instructions, and equipment sounds in noisy environments.
  • Ability to maintain DOT Medical Certificate
